The next morning, I took a taxi straight to the funeral home. By the time all the formalities were completed, it was already afternoon.
When I looked at the fragile, lifeless body of my baby in the box, my vision blurred with tears. The grief was suffocating, leaving me in a daze.
By the time we returned to the village, night had fallen. Ian was already snoring loudly in the outer room, showing
no signs of worry or concern.
The next day, as we prepared to leave for Paula’s house, lan suddenly stopped me, his expression unusually
serious.

“Wife, don’t come to the event today. There will be a lot of people, and if you catch something and get sick, I’ll feel
awful.”
I looked at him straight in the eyes and nodded. “Alright, I won’t go.”
Relieved, he smiled and extended his hand. “Give me the bracelet. I’ll present it to the baby on your behalf.” Reaching into my bag, I pulled out a beautifully wrapped gift box and handed it to him.

He grinned, unable to contain his excitement, and carefully slipped the box into his pocket before heading out
the door.
I stood at the window, watching his car disappear down the village road, and slowly smiled to myself.
The show was about to begin.
Paula’s child’s first birthday party was held at the most luxurious venue in the county, the Vans Hotel. By the time I arrived, the ceremony was already in full swing.
The banquet hall was packed, but I slipped into a corner seat unnoticed.
On stage, bathed in the spotlight, stood lan–the man I had been married to for three years–cradling Paula’s baby dressed in an elaborate red birthday outfit.
Beside him, Paula clung to him, her face glowing as they smiled sweetly at the cameras.
At my table, guests chatted animatedly.
“Paula really hit the jackpot. Who else in our village would hold a birthday party at such an expensive hotel? I heard the dishes here cost thousands per table!”
“Apparently, the baby’s grandparents adore him. They insisted on making it a grand celebration.”
“Even the grandmother sent a big gift. Paula will unwrap it on stage later. It’s supposed to be a surprise.”
I watched the happy couple on stage with icy detachment.

As the grandparents finished presenting their birthday gift, the host directed everyone’s attention back to Paula. She held the gift box lan had brought, smiling brightly as the cameraman zoomed in for the big reveal.
The host beamed. “What surprise has grandma prepared for little Lloyd? Let’s open it together and see her
blessing!”
In the spotlight, Paula opened the box with a wide, excited grin.
“Ah!” she shrieked, dropping the box to the ground as if it had burned her.
The cameraman instinctively zoomed in on the fallen contents, broadcasting the image on the large LED screen

It was Paula–wearing nothing but provocative lingerie–posing seductively for the camera. Her red lips were parted, her eyes heavy–lidded with desire.
The entire hall fell silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
lan stood frozen, his face a mask of shock and disbelief.
I stood, calm and collected, and walked onto the stage. Grabbing the microphone, I spoke in a steady voice. “Apologies, everyone. I seem to have brought the wrong gift. The one I’m holding is the gift meant for the child.” The room erupted in whispers and gasps as I held my head high, prepared to walk off the stage, leaving them to
deal with the aftermath.
