I felt his body react, warmth pulsing between us, but just when I thought he might give in, he seized my wrist, halting me in my tracks.
“Miss, if I help you, you’ll owe me. Fully.”
“Of course,” I whispered, breathless.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
A low chuckle rumbled from his chest as his grip tightened around my wrist. His eyes were calm, but beneath.
them, a storm raged.
“Alright, then.”

I heard a soft, strained groan escape from his lips, low and barely audible.

And then, his voice cut through the haze.
“Norman Davis.”
“Irene, remember this: my name is Norman
At that moment, I was lifted to the highest peak, the crashing waves of emotion sweeping me away, and I forgot how terrifying that name truly was
Almost without thinking, I cried out “Norman!”
Back in the hospital, Mathias gripped his phone, his fingers tightening around it in agitation, his mind a swirl of
unrest.
He was so distracted that he didn’t even hear Nathalia calling his name, her voice growing more insistent with
each passing second.
The doctor shot a glance at Nathalia, who seemed more embarrassed than concerned, a soft blush coloring her
cheeks.
To be honest, if Mathias hadn’t barged in, demanding immediate care, the doctor might’ve thought this was
some kind of stunt to stir trouble.
Taking advantage of the moment, the doctor quietly slipped out, leaving the room steeped in an uneasy silence. Unable to stay quiet any longer, Nathalia nudged Mathias, her voice dripping with feigned hurt. “Mathias, what’s going on in that head of yours? I’m in pain, and yet you haven’t said a single comforting word.” She sniffled dramatically. “Are you tired of me already? Do I annoy you?”
“I’m not ”
Mathias muttered the words, but his lack of reassurance only made the tension thicker.
His brow remained furrowed, his mind still somewhere far away, leaving Nathalia feeling more alone than ever. Nathalia’s frustration simmered beneath the surface, but she forced it down, her voice softening as she spoke.
“Mathias, are you worried about Irene?”
“But didn’t you say she knew Sanda and self–defense? Someone like Liam shouldn’t even come close to her,
right?”
“And you’ve arranged for bodyguards outside the room. The second something went wrong, they would’ve stormed in to protect her.”
“So why the worry?”
Logically, Nathalia had a point. But the unease gnawing at Mathias wouldn’t let go.
The thought of Irene, after ten years together, still able to say things like “stay away” or “you’ll never see me again” hit him like a fist to the gut. It made him want to tear her heart open to see if it was made of stone.
How could she be so cold?
But then, the echo of her voice, laced with fury and raw pain, cut through his thoughts.
“Mathias, I hate you!”
“I will never forgive you!”
The words struck him like a knife, sharp and relentless, and his chest constricted, breath coming in short bursts. Maybe, just maybe, he had crossed a line this time.
The regret etched across Mathias’s face was impossible to miss, and it made Nathalia’s blood boil with fury. She dug her nails into her thigh, forcing a wave of tears to spill down her cheeks.
“If you want, you can trade me for Irene.”
“What are you talking about?”
Mathias’s voice shot up, sharp and incredulous.

But when his gaze landed on Nathalia’s tear–streaked face, his anger faltered. Without a word, he pulled her into his arms, the words caught in his throat.
“Nathalia, how could I ever let you do something like that…”
“But if you hadn’t come in time, I might’ve already been delivered to Liam’s bed, all because of Irene.”
“I know she doesn’t care about me, and I’d leave if she wanted me to. But why does she have to be so cruel?”
“I would’ve been ruined.”
Hearing Nathalia’s sobs, Mathias’s heart twisted with regret. The hesitation he once felt now vanished, replaced with a steely resolve.
“Don’t worry, Nathalia I won’t let Irene off so easily this time.”
“I’ll make her pay for this.”
Mathias’s voice was steely, each word carrying the weight of his resolve.
Liam hadn’t been a match for Irene, and with the bodyguards stationed outside, they could’ve stormed in at any moment to rescue her
At worst, Irene would’ve been frightened; just a harsh lesson in humility.
After such a massive blunder, there was no way she could escape without facing consequences.
She needed to feel the sting, to understand that some words should never be spoken.
The thought brought a sense of cold calm to Mathias.
He raised his hand and sent a message to the bodyguards, his fingers tapping with quiet determination.
