“What?!”
Samuel was frozen on the spot. He looked at me in disbelief. His eyebrows knitted and with an accusing tone in his voice, he asked James, “Why didn’t you tell me about this earlier?”
James seemed to panic in the other line, so he explained. “Pardon me, Mr. Wilson. It was you who ordered me not to report anything related to Ms. Brown and her family.“W
I pressed my lips when I heard what Samuel’s assistant said. I knew Samuel didn’t have an ounce of care about me and my family. He would even probably celebrate if I died, knowing that nobody would ever pester him again. I wasn’t just an important existence in his life.
“Tch!” Samuel clicked his tongue and hung up before turning to face me. He trudged his way toward me with guilt in his eyes.”
“Juliet, I didn’t know what to say. I had no idea she was sick for real. The last time we met, she looked healthy and full of life. I didn’t know she was seriously ill,” he mumbled, looking at me with pity.
“Hah! The last time you saw my mother was three months ago, Samuel. I had to beg you to come and see her that time, too,” I said, bitterly. “My mother was in pain when you came to visit, but she forced herself to prepare your favorite food on the table. She was 20 happy to meet you that she ignored the doctor’s advice to rest just to accommodate you,” I added, feeling my chest tighten as I recalled what happened that day.
Everything was fine in the beginning but five minutes later, Samuel received a call. He didn’t even bother to tell us he was going. He just left us alone without a word.
I knew it was Nora who called so he didn’t hesitate to leave.
“Juliet, I had no idea,” Samuel responded in a soft voice.
“My mother felt sorry for me, but she said nothing. That night, I heard her crying in her room,” I continued, hitting my chest a couple of times to help me ease the pain I felt inside.
After that incident, I thought about breaking up with Samuel. But every time I saw his face, I couldn’t bear to do so. So, I made myself believe that maybe I still had a place in his heart and continued being foolish.
My mother didn’t like Samuel, but she knew how much I loved him so she didn’t say a word and supported me. All she wanted was to see me happy. She fought against cancer and managed to stay alive for three more months to attend my wedding.
But Samuel didn’t come, causing my mother pain and hopelessness until her last breath.
“It’s too late, Samuel. It doesn’t matter anymore,” I mumbled with a heavy heart.”
Noticing my cold attitude toward him, Samuel was stunned. He probably felt that this time, I was going to leave him for real and there was no turning back.
“Juliet, trust me. I didn’t mean to ditch you on your wedding day. You still want to get married, right? I’ll ask James to arrange another wedding for us. Let’s go get the marriage license tomorrow, alright?” Samuel convinced me, trying to make me feel better after he realized the consequence of him breaking his promise.
I took a step back and firmly told him, “There’s no need!“W
Samuel looked anxious about my reaction. “Juliet, why are you being stubborn?” He asked in frustration.
Stubborn? Yeah! I was indeed stubborn. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be wasting years of my life following him and wishing he’d notice me.%
It was because of my stubbornness that I managed to endure everything he did to me. All the humiliations and hurtful words he told me were bearable because I was stubborn to stay by his side.”
Finally, I had enough. I no longer craved his attention nor do I have the strength to be with him.”
“Samuel, it’s over,” I whispered and left.”
This time, I was ready to leave everything about us behind. And as always, he never chased after me.”
“I think I made the right choice,” I told myself and walked away from the place I used to call home.
