My chest tightened, but I powered off my phone. I refused to respond to his messages. It was time to move on.>>
That night, I stayed in my own apartment. The next morning, I went to the new home Robert and I had prepared as our marital house to retrieve my things. Most of my belongings had already been packed and my art supplies had been moved to my studio the day before. All that was left was one last suitcase.§
As I opened the door, a syrupy voice floated down the stairs. “Robbie, your eggs are so delicious! I’ve been craving your cooking ever since I was abroad.“}
I could hear Robert answer dotingly, “Silly girl. If you stay here, I’ll make them for you every day.“}
Diana looked depressed. “You’re going to get married soon with Trudy. She probably doesn’t like us spending time together too much. Maybe I should leave.“}
Robert pulled her into an embrace. “You’ve always known my feelings, haven’t you? Marrying her was never my choice. This decision is just to appease my parents. You’ve always been the one I truly wanted.”}}
I deliberately dropped my keys onto the floor with a loud clatter. The sound startled the two of them and they turned to look at me.” Robert quickly let go of Diana, but the damage was done.
Diana was draped in a silky, low–cut red nightgown. She was wearing my nightgown. It was meant for my wedding night, but here she was, treating everything in this house as hers even though she just moved in yesterday.”
When she noticed my gaze, she smiled shyly. With pretend innocence on her face, she said, “Trudy, I didn’t bring my luggage, so Robbie said I could borrow this. He mentioned it was new. You don’t mind, do you?“)
I forced a smile. “Oh, not at all.” Then without another word, I walked past them and headed upstairs to grab my suitcase. The bedroom was in complete disarray. There were discarded stockings and undergarments strewn across the floor. Anyone with eyes could tell what had transpired here.
Robert followed me and tried to close the door behind him. “Don’t overthink it. Nothing serious happened. We didn’t go all the way.“} His words made me gag. I covered my mouth and shoved him aside. “Move!“}
Then I dragged my suitcase down the stairs while ignoring the tremor in my hands.}
“Trudy,” Diana called out timidly. “Are you moving out?“>
At that moment, a car horn honked outside. Anthony’s driver appeared at the door. “Miss Peyton, do you need a hand?“}
.
I shook my head, then got ready to enter the car.
