Chapter 78
It took several hours on the air before I finally arrived safely at my final destination. I dragged my luggage and went to the apartment that the hospital had arranged for me.
Hunger gnawed at me, so I unpacked the snacks Jeremy had packed for me. As I reached the bottom, I noticed an envelope hidden beneath the food.”
Inside there were forty–five hundred dollars in the bag and a handwritten note that said, “The future is bright, keep on going!“}
It was written in Jeremy’s handwriting. Warmth spread through me and tears pricked my eyes.”
Warmth spread through me and tears pricked my eyes.”
After cleaning the room, my cell phone suddenly received a message from Jill.”
She wrote, “Husband, Jeremy took me to see the old medical records and surveillance footage. I know everything now! I’m sorry, I misunderstood you. I was wrong … please forgive me.“}]
Then she wrote again. “Let’s reconcile. Give me a chance to make it right. I’ll wait for you to come back in a year and we can have a child together.”
Her pleas felt hollow. Without hesitation, I blocked her.
The days that followed were peaceful. For months, there was no word from her.
At the hospital where I studied, people treated me with genuine respect. No one knew my past or shied away from me for fear of being asked for money.”
They only knew that I was the most promising doctor in the domestic hospital with a bright future.
More than six months later, I received a friend request on my phone. My instincts told me it was one of Jill’s burner accounts.
I neither accepted nor declined but left it hanging.
Yet, her post started appearing in my feed.
“I failed my visa application for the third time. Huh! When the hell am I going to leave the country?“>
“Got a new job today. The pay is much better. Soon, I will be able to pay off my debts soon!“}
“My boss scolded me today. I feel so sad. I wish you were here by my side.”}
In each post, she looked modestly dressed, her face bare of makeup. At the end of every caption, she added the letter “ILM.“}
I know what exactly it meant. It stand for “I love Maxwell”
I treated her updates like gossip and scrolled through them without a flicker of emotion.
Time flew by and a year later, I returned to my home country.D
As expected, Jeremy picked me up. However, he was followed by the last woman I wanted to see. It was Jill.
She stood behind him. Her hand clutched a large bouquet of flowers and looked shyly at me.”
‘Maxwell, welcome home. I made a big dinner to celebrate your ….“}
Jeremy shrugged apologetically. “She’s been coming to the hospital, asking about you. She even followed me here.“}
I smiled faintly but didn’t respond to him. Instead, I turned to her.”
“Jill,” I said calmly without any emotion, “The previous divorce agreement has expired. I’ll send you a new one later. There’s no need for dinner. Goodbye”
Her lips parted as if to argue, but my cold gaze silenced her. She muttered an apology and turned to leave with her head hung low. As she walked away, I noticed she was limping. One of her legs severely shrunk. Before she exited, she threw the bouquet into a nearby trash can.
Noticing the direction of my eyes, Jeremy shook his hand and brought me back from my daze. “She’s had it rough. After she left you, that man cheated her out of everything. Medical bills are expensive and kept piling up, so she couldn’t afford the treatment. Slowly her leg worsened and quickly its atrophied became faster and now… well, she might never walk properly again.“}
Then he said, “For your sake, I did what I could and got her some assistance. It’s not much, but it helps.”
I felt no pity, only a bitter sense of irony. She brought this upon herself.}
*Jeremy, you don’t need to help her anymore,” I said.”
Jeremy studied me for a moment but didn’t say anything.
