Chapter 44 High–Speed Trap
These things still needed to be confirmed.
Zayden locked eyes with Kane for a brief, silent moment before turning and striding away.

Watching the three of them leave, Kane’s cheerful expression slowly faded, replaced by something far more
serious.
Night fell. The old town didn’t have much in the way of nightlife, and the lights here were nowhere near as bright as in the city.
The three of them headed back toward the hotel. Zayden was behind the wheel.
Quinn sat in the car, lost in thought. She was wondering why Zayden had taken so long to show up. She hadn’t planned on waiting, but this situation had nothing to do with him in the first place. Still, he’d helped her. She couldn’t just leave him behind.
She was so distracted that she didn’t even notice they were driving along a mountain road, with very little traffic. Glancing up at the rearview mirror, she saw the sharp glint in Zayden’s eyes.
Marcus, seated in the back, looked equally serious. Just like Zayden, he seemed to have sensed something.
That was when Quinn finally noticed a car tailing them. She wasn’t sure at first, so she turned to the two men beside her with a questioning look.
“It’s fine. Don’t worry. I’m here,” Zayden said calmly, trying to glance behind them.
“Eyes on the road,” Marcus reminded him, as composed as ever.
Now that she was sure they were being followed, Quinn couldn’t help feeling anxious. After all, the two men in the car–both in identity and in status–were anything but ordinary.
After speaking, the two men exchanged a look. Just one look was enough to make them both thankful they were there. If they hadn’t come, Quinn would’ve been in danger again—alone.
Up ahead was a sharp curve around a cliffside. If the car behind chose that moment to ram them, their vehicle could easily be sent flying off the mountain road.”
“Zayden!”
Quinn shouted, tense with fear.
Zayden, an experienced racer, noticed the other car speeding up. He slammed on the brakes.
The second the car behind slammed into them, he risked everything–steering hard toward the cliffside and drifting just enough that the two outer wheels scraped along the edge.
With a stunning, death–defying drift, he curved them around the mountain’s sharp bend.
“Ugh!”

“I’m okay!”
She didn’t have time to think about anything else. She clung tightly to the front seat.

A second later, they heard a massive crash behind them. The car chasing them slammed into the curve and went straight over the edge.
They’d made it.
“Quinn! Are you alright?!”
Zayden was shaken–he hadn’t been that scared in years. He checked the mirror, panicked. “Are you hurt?”
Quinn slowly straightened up, her voice trembling. “I… I’m fine. Are you guys okay?”
Zayden scanned her quickly and only then let himself breathe. “I’m good too. Don’t worry. We lost them.”
Then Quinn turned to Marcus in the passenger seat. “Marcus, are you okay? Are you hurt?”
Marcus removed his hand from his arm and gave a small shake of his head. “I’m fine.”
They thought it was over–but then they all realized.
There wasn’t just one car.
Zayden slammed the gas pedal to the floor. His voice was barely audible over the roar of the engine. “Quinn, hold on!”
Quinn hugged her body tightly, her hand reaching for the Tranquil Pill. Kane was right. The second she got the pill, they came after her.
Up ahead, there was a lighthouse. As its beam swept across the road, Quinn happened to glance behind them–and froze.
She saw a familiar face behind the wheel of the car chasing them.
Ethan.
Sam’s son.
Everything clicked.
Sam was closely tied to Olive. If Ethan was Sam’s son, then naturally he would help his father.
So, if they could catch Ethan, would that be enough to implicate both Sam and Olive?
At the very least, they could use him as leverage to get some answers.
Olive had hurt people out of malice and tried to steal what wasn’t hers–one count after another. It was more than enough to bury her.
Quinn tucked the Tranquil Pill safely into her coat, shoved a few key items into her pocket, took off her

After thinking for a second, she tore the cushion open. Inside was sponge. She grabbed all the bottled water from the backseat and poured it over the sponge.
“I’ll toss the cushion in front of their car. It might buy us a little time.
Zayden’s eyes stayed glued to the road. The car sped through the narrow mountain lanes. But there was another problem–they were running out of gas.
Even if they could shake their tail, they wouldn’t be able to escape for long.
“Now’s not the time,” Zayden muttered.
Quinn turned toward him, confused. “What do you mean?”
