Chapter 77
Preston could not take it anymore. He snatched Xavier’s phone and hurled it against the wall, shattering it.
Xavier froze. “What the- My phonel
Ignoring him. Preston stormed to the entrance of the operating room, pacing like a caged animal “Regina!”
Roy dragged him aside. “What’s your problem?””
Preston’s eyes glistened, his breathing uneven. “I can’t take it. Watching those videos–I can’t. She lied about disliking sweets because she couldn’t have any. She suffered beatings no one stopped. I can’t watch anymore!”
He broke free from Roy’s grip, “Don’t tell me you aren’t upset when you watch them!”
Roy frowned but stay calm. “We’re all upset. But we can’t act like kids, breaking down every time she hurts. If you’re falling apart just watching her cry, how are you supposed to protect her!”
The rebuke sank in, and Preston slowly steadied himself.
At that moment, the operating room light flicked off.
The group’s attention snapped to the door as Stephen stepped our, peeling off his mask with a look of exasperation. “Preston, what’s with all the yelling? I thought you were about to throw yourself against the door.
Preston glared but said nothing
Roy cut in. “How’s she?”
Everyone quickly gathered around, their eyes full of anticipation,
“She’s fine,” Stephen said, his tone serious. I replaced her damaged abdomen with a bulletproof cybernetic implant. Not only is she alive, but she’ll be tougher than before. She’s awake now.”
Roy let out a sigh of relief, “That’s good. I’ll cover her medical bills.”
Stephen scoffed, “Don’t bother. I’d planned to work on her anyway, though I didn’t expect it to be a rescue operation instead of an enhancement
His voice dropped, more somber. “She’s alive, but there’s a downside. Her internal injuries were severe. I had to replace three organs with artificial ones. With so many cybernetic compartments, her Humanity will grow painfully slow–if at all. You all need to be ready for that.”
The group exchanged uneasy glances.
Then it would be difficult for her to earn Humanity now…
Steve pinched his brow as he said, “Doesn’t matter. She’s alive. We’ll figure the rest out later?
Stephen nodded. “Keeping her alive was a close call If the hospital hadn’t acted quickly, she wouldn’t be here:
The door of the operating room opened, and Regina was wheeled out.
The anesthesia had not worn off yet. Her head was very heavy, and the light stung her eyes, I
making it hard to open them.
In the blink of an eye, one by one, familiar faces leaned into her view
Preston was the first, “Regina, how do you feel!”
Regina managed a faint smile. “I’m okay”
Her gaze drifted to his blood–soaked hair. “Why are you
covered in blood?”
Grasping her hand, Preston said proudly, “It’s Hugh’s. We avenged you. He’ll need cybernetic limbs now. We didn’t let them off easy.
Regina blinked in surprise. They really avenged her? she thought.
Presion smoothed her dumped hair, his voice soft. “You’ve been through so much. I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”
She looked to the other side, puzzled.

Roy quietly pushed her bed, his eyes heavy with unspoken thoughts.
Then, she looked at Steve, who gave her a faint, bittersweet smile.
She did not know how to react, but warmth filled her chest as she resolved to remember every expression around her.
Just then, a head nurse approached Stephen, urgency in her voice. “Doctor Stephen, the Mitchell’s insists you perform a cybernetic surgery for a patient”
Stephen turned, visibly annoyed. The Mitchell’s? Is it Leila Mitchell!”
The nurse nodded, “Yes, the boxing champion. Both her cybernetic arms are broken, and they’ve bought replacements. They’re requesting you to perform the surgery.”
Stephen’s expression darkened. Tell them to get lost.”
The nurse blinked. “What?”
Stephen’s eyes revealed murderous intent, I won’t fix anything for Leila. Let them find someone else.”
