Chapter 10%
Instead of sympathy, the internet delivered even harsher blows.
“You deserve to lose your daughter! Rich scum like you always pretends to do good but have no real conscience. This is karma, plain and simple!”
“Exactly! You couldn’t even adopt a disabled girl, so don’t act like you’re some saint! Maybe all that charity work was just a performance. You’re worse than animals!”
“Maybe your daughter went missing because of this! The universe has a way of punishing people like you. Adopt the girl and maybe, just maybe, you’ll get your kid back.”
Aaron trembled with rage, on the verge of losing control. He was ready to call a lawyer and sue every single commenter.
However, before he could, his phone rang. It was the police.M
Cassandra had requested to speak with him. Her voice was weak. She was sobbing uncontrollably on the other end.
Uncle, I’m sorry. I never meant for things to turn out this way. I know you must be worried sick about Ella going missing. If it helps, maybe it’ll be better for you to go ahead and finalize the adoption paperwork, don’t you think so? I know this whole online storm is hurting you and Auntie. I promise I won’t go back with you and Cassie will just stay at the orphanage quietly.”
Aaron was about to refuse outright, but I quickly snatched the phone from his hand.
I said sweetly, “Cassie, Honey, we know you didn’t mean for this to happen. Okay? Auntie understands. How about this? We’ll go and talk to the director then sort out the adoption paperwork. Could you wait for us at the police station? You’re such a good girl. You’re trying to help us, aren’t you?”
When she heard I had agreed, Cassandra did not push anymore and hung up the phone with a thud.
Aaron’s face darkened even further.
He then asked, “Why would you agree to that? Can’t you see what she’s doing? This whole thing is online… she is the one who orchestrated it! She’s manipulating the public! That child is dangerous!“}}
“Not only is Cassandra a highly intelligent girl, she’s also so calculating. I won’t let her get away with this! I don’t believe she escaped this!”
I held his arm and quietly laid out the documents we’d just found in Cassandra’s bag and said, “Then look at this.”
The adoptive parents ceased their rummaging and also leaned in. A spark of expectation lightened up in their eyes.
Inside the papers was an old newspaper article about a factory accident that had caused the site to shut down. It had happened five years ago and Cassandra had circled it in red.]
From the time printed on the paper, we learned it was approximately five years since the factory was left behind. It was so happened that it was situated in a sparsely populated rural area.
Aaron’s eyes brightened and the four of us looked at each other, stood up and bolted out the door.
As the car drove further away, the roads gradually became even more deserted.
The four people’s heartbeats were almost leaping out of their chests because of the anxiety.N
By the time we arrived in front of the gate, the wild barking of several dogs echoed from inside the factory. They were accompanied by gusts of low growls that tore through flesh and blood.
This made my heart plummet into my stomach. I yanked up my sleeves and was ready to charge in.
However, Aaron halted my steps. He handed me a thick wooden stick from the ground and took one for himself. The others followed his lead.
Armed and ready, the four of us kicked open the rusted factory doors.
Several wild dogs turned at the sound with their bloodshot eyes.
I looked past them toward the top of their head. There, I saw my daughter.
She was clinging tightly to a steel beam. Her feet were dangling with nothing beneath her.
“Sweetheart! Son! Hold on! Mommy’s coming!”
Cassandra’s adoptive mother cried out too because her own son was hanging beside my daughter.
The boy’s pants were stained with pee. He was too scared that he had wet himself.
Although my daughter had a skinny frame, she was still trying to care for him and keep him from falling while trying to save herself. However, she was at her limit and on the verge of collapsing.
She was so focused on keeping her and him safe for quite some time that she did not even notice me and Aaron entering.
Tears stung my eyes.
Aaron and the boy’s adoptive father didn’t hesitate. They rushed forward and swung their sticks with everything they had.
After a few fierce blows, the wild dogs fell and stayed lifeless on the ground.
Aaron and the adoptive father’s bodies were covered with bruises and blood.
