I was somewhat speechless and even found Quillon a bit childish.N
The condition for my marriage to Quillon had been that the Thorne Family would help rescue my father.N
I didn’t know the complicated reasons behind why the long–silent Thome Family had proposed a marriage to someone with a tarnished reputation like mine.
All I knew was that I had to hold onto Quillon tightly to turn the situation around.
Therefore, I still had to speak nicely.
“That won’t do, you are my new client now, so I have to prioritize you first.“N
I looked at the nameplate on the main table and couldn’t help but admire the extent of the effort Lucian had put into making sure everything was perfect for Astrid.&
Even Mrs. Prescott, who had never been fond of Astrid, was willing to show up.
Thinking of Lucian’s mother, I felt a pang of sadness. She was probably the only person in the world who wanted me and Lucian to be together.
That’s why she had risked being talked about behind her back to sign that strange agreement with me.N
But in the end, it was all undone because of Lucian.N
“Hey, isn’t this the young lady from the Aldridge Family who’s been with Mr. Prescott for ten years?“N
“This Aldridge Family young lady isn’t just with Mr. Prescott! Her mother has cozied up to many influential people over the years, who knows if Lyra was ever sent off.”
“A month ago, she was still dreaming of a shotgun wedding and now that the rightful woman has returned, her dreams shattered immediately!“&
“Don’t mention it; Mr. Prescott forbids anyone from bringing up this matter now, afraid his new sweetheart will find out!“N
Laughter erupted around me, echoing in my ears. I stood frozen amidst the crowd, a suffocating sense of entrapment washing over me.N Sweat began to bead in my palms and an overwhelming urge to flee screamed in my mind.N
I had meticulously orchestrated every step, terminating the pregnancy, voiding the childbearing agreement, exchanging Astrid for the Prescott Family’s financial support and finally offering myself to the Thorne Family in exchange for rescuing my father.N
Every move had been part of my careful planning.N
But I had never anticipated standing at the center of public scrutiny again, subjected to their gossip.N
“She even brought a blind man with her today!” Someone shouted from the crowd and in an instant, a swarm of people gathered in front of me.”
I quickly pulled Quillon behind me, fearing that someone might accidentally hurt him because of the commotion.§
The Thome Family had been a prominent household for generations, though they had retreated from the public eye two decades ago. Now, aside from the Thorne Company, their other enterprises remained nameless.N
Yet, the Thorne Family was far from as simple as it seemed on the surface.
“Lyra, you couldn’t climb up to Lucian, so now you’re settling for a blind man? Doesn’t seem like a good trade.“N
“I heard you’re running around begging people to get your dad out of jail. Why not come to me? I might consider helping!”
Leading the group was Jason Clapeo, one of those second–generation heirs who spent his days with Lucian. His gaze was full of malice as he leered at me from head to toe.
“What are you staring at? It’s your blessing that someone still wants a washed–up woman like you!“N
Laughter erupted as soon as those words left Jason’s mouth.
I pulled Quillon behind me, taking a step back. “Well, sorry to disappoint you. I’m already engaged, so I wouldn’t stoop to someone as trashy as you!“%
Jason, used to being insulted, wasn’t fazed. With a grin, he reached out to sling his arm around my shoulder.N
Before he could touch me, Quillon caught his hand in a firm grip. With a sharp twist, a crack echoed in the air.
“Ah! Jason screamed in pain.
His screams echoed through the hall, drawing everyone’s attention.”
I glanced at Quillon, his expression as calm as ever, but unease brewed within me. Without any elders present to recognize him, his lack of restraint could easily attract trouble.
Suddenly, a loud crash shattered the tense atmosphere as the doors behind us were flung open.
Even Jason forgot his cries, turning toward the commotion.
“Lyra!” A voice boomed across the room, laced with fury.
“You’re engaged?”
Lucian’s voice, cold and sharp, cut through the tense air as he stood in the doorway, his expression dark with fury.
Before anyone could react, he strode over with quick, determined steps and seized my arm, pulling me firmly toward him.
