Dad nodded too. “It’s good to have goals. If you work hard and get into one of those Ivies, great. If you don’t, we couldn’t care less.“}
Well, that’s it. They’re done with her.”
Before, Celia was the one they relied on to ‘boost their fame‘.}
Now?
They didn’t need her anymore
not with me around. No one could top my credentials.
Celia looked absolutely devastated. Her eyes were bloodshot and the way she stared at me… it was like she wanted to set me on fire. “Celia,” Dad said sternly, “you need to understand your place.“}
Mom added, “The fact that we’re even keeping you here is already a huge favor. If you dare harm Sherrie, we’ll kick you out.“>
Celia’s heart completely shattered. She clutched her steak knife tightly, her eyes burning with hatred.
And just then, one of the new maids
–
one who had only been hired three days ago – suddenly pulled a gun from under her apron.
She must have been sent by the higher–ups to protect me, since they knew I was coming back to the Spencer.
She pointed the gun straight at Celia and said coldly, “If I ever catch you showing hostility towards the Chief again, I’ll shoot you.“}]
Dad and Mom were stunned speechless.
Even Alden scooted closer to me, a little shaken.
I casually waved my hand, signaling the maid to leave.
“You’re scared I came back to take everything that’s yours?” I asked calmly.
“You see, with or without me, this fortune was never going to end up in your hands–because you’ve never truly been a Spencer. They’d rather hand it all to some distant relative than to you. That’s just how it is.“}
“And frankly, I don’t care about the money,” I added. “You and I–we want very different things.”}
“One last piece of advice–don’t even think about laying a hand on me, or you’ll be dead. Aside from the maid you just saw and a few others protecting me inside, there are also snipers stationed outside the house. They’re on standby, twenty–four seven.”}
I thought for a moment, then added, “Oh, right. One more thing you probably need to know–my adoptive parents weren’t miners. They owned the mine. If we’re talking net worth, they’re actually richer than the Spencer.” }
My words left the entire room stunned.
Dad finally found his voice and asked, “But that day we picked you up, you were working in the mine.“}
–
“I was calibrating the safety system in the mine which I designed myself,” I said, exasperated. “I mean, come on. Have you not seen how sluggish I am? You really think I’d be digging coal?” }
Meanwhile, Celia’s face lit up with hope.
“You mean… my real parents are rich?“}
“Yeah,” I said flatly. D
“But I do have to warn you that we have younger siblings. You’ll get your share in time, so don’t try to fight for what isn’t yours,” I reminded
her. D
They had all assumed I’d lived a life of hardship.
But the reality was, I had grown up surrounded by love and unimaginable wealth. My adoptive parents treated me like I was their own, showering me with love and I was super close with my siblings.
The card I gave Alden had several hundred million on it. I was never short of money and even less short of love.
Celia was silent for a long time before suddenly standing up and announcing, “I’m going home.“}
“Go ahead,” I said indifferently. I’d expected this.
Half a month later, I got summoned urgently for work. Naturally, I chose Alden to come with me as my personal assistant. Before leaving, I visited my adoptive family, the Lutz.
They weren’t very happy–not because of me, but because Celia had been scheming for their estate. She started as soon as her foot stepped on the property.
It was awkward, honestly, because technically, this wasn’t my family matter anymore. Seeing my discomfort, my adoptive parents reassured me with smiles, telling me not to think of it and in their eyes, I would always be their daughter.
When they learned about my relationship with Alden, they didn’t hold back – showering him with money, properties and gifts.”
Before leaving, I spoke with Celia one last time. Mostly to warn her to stay quiet. But I could tell–her ambition was still there. And she was as selfish as ever.”
I didn’t have time to deal with her because that same night, I had to leave. }
After three years of non–stop work, Alden and I finally got a real vacation. The first thing we did was return to the Spencer Family estate – officially acknowledging my roots.”
Later, both families gathered to discuss our marriage.
Because of my special status, we kept the wedding extremely low–key. Not even the extended family was invited.

Because of my special status, we kept the wedding extremely low–key. Not even the extended family was invited.
What surprised me, though, was Celia. She had become much calmer, more mature. After some digging, I found out it was thanks to my
Lutz brother – he had knocked some sense into her a few times. That’s what finally made her stop.
People change with their environment. The Spencer was always calculating–every decision based on profit. No wonder Celia had turned out selfish and ruthless. But living with the Lutz changed her little by little.§
Alden and I stayed home for a week before heading to the capital to report for duty. Three months of traveling later, we were finally back on the job.”
A few more years passed. After wrapping up final projects, I found out I was pregnant and finally, I got another well–deserved vacation.
