Chapter 6%
“Like I said, Mr. Morgan, I’m busy. And I have no intention of coming back to your company. Handle your company’s mess yourself–it has nothing to do with me.”
I ended the call without waiting for a response. I wasn’t about to waste another second talking to anyone from the Morgan family.2
I thought that after rejecting them so many times, they’d finally give up and leave me alone.}
But of course, I was wrong.
Three days later, Nicole called again.
“Ryan, get back here right now! The company’s falling apart because of you!“}
“If you don’t show up soon, I swear I’ll take you to court. I’ll say you intentionally sabotaged our contracts!“}
Her words were so ridiculous, I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Miss Morgan, I’ve got a clean conscience. Everything I did at that company was by the book. If you want to sue me, go ahead. I’ll wait for the court summons.“I
And with that, I hung up the phone.
I was seriously done with her.2
After that, I blocked her number–along with every number from her family. I knew they wouldn’t stop bothering me otherwise.}
I asked Lauren to find out what was really going on at the Morgan Group–whatever had them all in such a panic.}
She rushed out to investigate and less than thirty minutes later, she came back with the details.
“Mr. Anderson, the Morgan Group signed a contract recently with a clause that says if they fail to deliver, they have to pay triple damages.“}
“Drew Hastings signed off on it shortly after you left. He didn’t understand any of the fine print. The other party loaded it with hidden terms.”2
“And he had no idea how fast the turnaround was supposed to be. He signed without reading and now… they can’t meet the delivery deadline.“%
As soon as she said that, everything clicked.}
Drew had massively screwed up and now the Morgans were scrambling for someone to clean it up. I was the only one they could think of who might be able to fix it.
And if I couldn’t fix it? Well, I’d make a convenient scapegoat.”
They were probably already planning to pin everything on me. Hell, they might even try to get me thrown in jail for Drew and Nicole’s
mistake.
Even though I’d long expected them to be this shameless, hearing it play out still left me feeling drained.
“Keep a close eye on what the Morgans do next,” I told Lauren after a pause.
“You’re not actually thinking of helping them, are you?” she asked, surprised.
“No. But I did build that company from the ground up. I know its structure and assets better than anyone. If they go bankrupt, we’re buying out the best pieces. I’m not letting all that hard work go to waste.“}
That company was my blood, sweat and tears. No way I’d just let it go without a fight.”
Lauren let out a breath of relief and nodded. Then she rushed out to get things in motion.
I went back to my own work.
But then, right in the middle of everything, I got a call–from the courthouse.”
Nicole actually went through with it. She filed a lawsuit against me for commercial fraud, accusing me of signing that disastrous contract under Drew’s name.!
I was stunned for a second.”
That contract was Drew’s mess. He signed it himself. What the hell did that have to do with me?!!
They were trying to pin it all on me. They’d even started lining everything up–hoping to drag me down with them. The audacity was unbelievable !
I couldn’t help but laugh
