CHAPTER EIGHT
Lucas stared at the pendant on the floor, unable to process what his Beta had just told him. The expensive jewelry lay there on the floor still reflecting the light of the living room and mocking his confusion.
“What did you just say?” Lucas finally managed to speak
The Beta shifted uncomfortably. “Sir, Evelyn is gone. She left the pack territory earlier today”
Lucas laughed nervously, shaking his head. “This is ridiculous. Go bring her back! Tell her I’m home. She knows better than to leave without my permission.”
“That’s what I’m trying to tell you, sir,” Marcus continued. “She didn’t just leave for a walk. She’s gone far away.” He pulled out his phone and showed Lucas a security footage. This was recorded at the international airport. She boarded a flight fifteen hours ago.”
Lucas snatched the phone, eyes widening as he watched Evelyn walking confidently through the terminal, dragging a large suitcase behind her. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.X
“This can’t be right,” Lucas muttered, grabbing the phone to look closer. “This has to be fabricated.”
He rushed upstairs, taking two steps at a time and burst into their bedroom. The closet doors stood open, empty hangers where her clothes once hung. The drawers that held her jewelry were pulled out, emptied of their contents. Her books, her photos, everything that belonged to her were all gone.X
His eyes landed on the safe in the corner of the room. With trembling hands, he punched in the code and yanked it open. Everything was gone. All the documents he kept, including the mate bond certificate that proved they belonged together missing.
Lucas slammed his fist into the wall, creating a large hole in the plaster. “How dare she fucking leave me! I’m her fiancé She can’t just walk away like this!”
diara appeared in the doorway, watching Lucas’s breakdown with a smirk playing at the corner of her lips.
“After all we’ve done for her, this is how she repays us,” Clara scoffed, crossing her arms. “She’s always been ungrateful. Now she runs away like a coward.”
Lucas turned to face her, his eyes wild with anger
Clara continued “After hitting me like that and almost killing our baby, she behaves this way. What kind of monster does that?”
“She-“”
“She doesn’t deserve your concern, Lucas,” Clara interrupted. “All these years you’ve given her a home, protection, love. And this is how she thanks you?
Lucas paced the room like a caged animal, his breathing heavy!
“Think about it,” Clara pressed. “She broke Mara vase, attacked me in the bathroom, and pushed me today. Now she disappears without a word? She clearly doesn’t care about you?
“She’s always been jealous of our connection, Clara added with a triumphant smile. “She knew she could never replace what we have That’s why she can.“)
Lucas stopped pacing, something in Clara’s words catching his attention. He turned to face her with his expression suddenly cold. “Did you ever tell her our relationship was real?
Clara’s smile faltered. “What?“||
“I asked if you told Evelyn’our relationship was real. Did you?” Lucas demanded with a voice dangerous.!!
“No, of course I didnt Clara replied in confusion.
Lucas ran his hand through his hair in frustration. “You know everything between us is fake, right? I only did this so you wouldn’t be humiliated in the pack as someone who ran away and came back with nothing. You know we’re not really together, I hope you never told her otherwise.”
Clara’s face paled. “Of course I didn’t tell her anything!”
“And the pregnancy,” Lucas continued, “it was just to make everything believable, to show that you’re accepted by someone. That’s the only reason I had sex with you and you ended up with this pregnancy.”
Clara’s eyes widened. “I’m aware of our arrangement.“”
“So why then did she fucking leave me? Why? Lucas roared, knocking over a lamp!
Clara approached him cautiously. “Don’t mind her, it’s just a trick. She’s probably staying at a hotel nearby to make you worry. She’ll come crawling back when she realizes she has nowhere else to go.7
Lucas wasn’t sure if Clara was right. Something felt different this time. Evelyn had never left before, not like this. Always after their fights, she’d be waiting for him with dinner ready and an apology on her lips.3
He closed his eyes, trying to calm himself. In the silence of his mind, he reached for the familiar connection, the mindlink he shared with Evelyn, He had closed it earlier while attending to Clara, not wanting to hear Evelyn’s complaints.
As the connection opened, pain unlike anything he’d ever felt before crashed through him. This wasn’t ordinary pain–this was worse. far worse. It felt like his soul was being torn apart, like someone had reached inside his chest and was slowly pulling his heart out.
Lucas dropped to his knees, clutching his chest, A howl of agony ripped from his throat as the realization hit him.
“What’s happening?” Clara demanded, backing away from his form.
Lucas couldn’t answer. The pain spread through every fiber of his being. His wolf whimpered and thrashed inside him in desperation.X
“No,” he gasped, cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. “No, this can’t be happening.”
11:19 AM & d
“No,” he gasped, cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. “No, this can’t be happening”
The words Evelyn had spoken through their mindlink before cutting it forever echoed in his head: “Lucas Walker, I reject our mate bond. Forever”
“N000000000 The scream tore from his throat as he collapsed completely onto the floor.
Evelyn wasn’t playing any tricks.ž
She had rejected their bond, the most sacred connection between mates. The one thing that could never be undone.
She was gone forever
