Alpha, Alpha Emery.

At the tribe gathering, he stood between me and Beta Sasha, one arm around each of us.
To the pack, he announced gently, “They both matter to me.”
On his right was me, his proclaimed Oathmate. On his left, Beta Sasha, weeping delicately into his chest.
I had been released from confinement just that morning. He claimed it was for my emotional recovery, but I saw it clearly–his grip on Beta Sasha’s shoulder was firmer than the hand he offered me.
Beta Sasha’s voice trembled as she sobbed, “I never wanted to steal anything from her. I was just so scared for the children. But Omega Caroline… she’s not their mother. How could she have risked their lives like that?”

I stayed silent. What was there to say?
Alpha Emery placed his hand on my shoulder and spoke to the crowd like a peacemaker. “Omega Caroline has been through a lot. And Beta Sasha was traumatized. We’re one family–we shouldn’t be tearing each other apart.”
If the story ended there, maybe I would’ve stayed quiet.
But fate wasn’t finished yet.
That very night, a mysterious account uploaded a video to the Mountain Accord platform. Footage from the night of the fire.
The image was grainy, but the figure was clear enough–a female wolf leaping through flames with two pups strapped to her back. Then, she jumped from a fifth–story window.
It was me.

Me, risking everything to save the children.
The comments exploded:
“She’s the real mother!”
“Where were you, Alpha Emery?”
“She was in the fire. Were you in Beta Sasha’s bed?”
“Don’t talk about love if you let her burn alone!”
I didn’t sleep that night.
The guards outside my window paced nervously. Alpha Emery never came. No messages. No explanations.
And I knew–he was slipping.
The next day, the plaza was packed again.
Only this time, no one came to obey.

They came to demand answers.

“Why was she locked up after saving the pups?”
“Why did the patrol block the exit that night?”
“Where did the sleep powder come from?”
“If Alpha Emery loves her so much, why wasn’t he at the fire?”
The elders finally stepped forward. A group of silver–furred, sharp–eyed wolves stood at the front.
“We will initiate a full investigation into the fire.”
“Until the truth is revealed, the Alpha may not control witnesses.”
“Any interference will be punished under tribal law.”
The crowd erupted with approval

Someone shouted, “Omega Caroline is no container–she’s a hero!”
For the first time, I stood before the tribe without lowering my head.
And for the first time, cracks appeared in Alpha Emery’s mask.
His smile faltered as he spoke. “Internal conflict weakens us all. I accept the elders‘ decision.”
Then he reached for me.
“You should rest. Let me handle this.”
I met his eyes and answered softly, “There’s no rush. I’ll wait.”
He was starting to panic–not because of guilt, but because of image.

Those Omega voices he once ignored had become a storm above his throne.
Beta Sasha stood behind him, still clinging to his hand. But her fingers trembled.
She knew–if just one more secret came out, she’d fall with him.
That evening, three unfamiliar female Betas appeared at my door.
They handed me a rolled parchment.
“We stand with you.”

I gripped the message tightly.
Not everyone believed the lies.
Not everyone feared the Alpha.

window, looking toward the towering Alpha Hall.
That was Alpha Emery’s throne–the symbol of his power.
But its foundation had begun to crumble.
All I had done was survive the fire.
And somehow, that was enough to make me a symbol.
I never wanted to be Luna.
