I saw her hand shake as she tried to lift her coffee.
Dashiell froze, too, just standing there like a statue.
Their faces were a mess of emotion.
Me? I played dumb.
“Well? Don’t just stand there–come sit down.”
That finally jolted him into moving.
He walked over slowly, unsure where to sit.
I was sitting across from Anna, leaving the third chair empty.
I smiled.
“Don’t just stand there awkwardly.”
“Grab a chair. Anna’s family, right?”
“Or do I need to get it for you myself?”
He pulled over a chair and sat down.
“You said you didn’t want to break up, right?”
“Great. Let’s do this.”
“Anna’s a professional–she can design our wedding attire.”
“We’ll get married next month.”
Dashiell didn’t say a word.
Sweat gathered on his forehead.
“Cat got your tongue?”
“You had plenty to say when you were guilt–tripping my family.”
That pushed him over the edge–he grabbed my hand.
“Come on. Let’s talk about this in private.”
I yanked my hand away.

Chapter 7
“Why? Got something to hide?”
“Babe, stop making a scene…”
“Am I?”
“Anna told me you waited seven years while she was overseas, then married her the second she got back.”
“Is that true?”
Still no answer.
So I slapped him.
Hard.
“Say something!”
His cheek turned bright red, the shape of my hand burned into his skin.
Anna couldn’t stay quiet any longer. She shot to her feet.
“If you already knew everything, why even play this little game?”
“Yes, I married Dashiell. So what?”
“It’s not like you two were legally married.”
“There’s no law that says he had to choose you.”
“Anna. That’s enough.”
She’d been defending him, but Dashiell’s sudden outburst shut her down.
She froze, stunned.
Her eyes welled up immediately.
Dashiell opened his mouth, looking guilty, and tried to wipe her tears.
She slapped his hand away.
“You’re yelling at me now? For her?”
“Don’t forget, I’m your wife!”
Dashiell’s face turned crimson, veins popping on his forehead.
But he didn’t say a word.
Anna grabbed the table and flipped it, spilling coffee everywhere, then stormed off.
Chapter 7
And just like that, Dashiell crumpled into the chair like all the air had been sucked out of him.
