Chapter 6
Night fell, and under the silver moonlight, the Humvee rolled smoothly down the highway.
I couldn’t help but lift the flap and stare out at the landscape blurring past, feeling a heavy weight in my chest. When I first arrived at the border outpost, all I saw was endless sand and dust.
It was Zachary who pulled me up onto his horse, promising he’d show me the wild beauty of this no–man’s land.
But then the fighting broke out, and Zachary got swallowed up by the war, too busy for anything else.
I kept to myself in the barracks, quiet and obedient, even pushing myself to study battlefield medicine.
But all I ever saw were shattered bodies and rivers of blood.
When the war finally slowed down, I thought we’d have time.
Instead, Zachary chose to go horseback riding with Sophie, laughing and carefree under the open sky.
Looking back now, the promises that kept me alive through those freezing, miserable nights…
They scattered like sand in a desert wind, gone without a trace.
The campfires were burning bright around the base by the time the sun set completely, but there was still no sign of “Whirlwind.”
The soldiers started to get restless:
“Even the fastest Humvee shouldn’t take this long.”
“It’s been two hours. Where the hell is the Colonel with his wife?”
“You think maybe he got caught in an ambush?”
The men traded uneasy glances.
Off to the side, Sophie’s expression shifted, just for a second.
The lieutenant frowned, tapping his fingers impatiently against the sheath of his knife.
“I’ll take a team and go find the Colonel.”
Just as he finished speaking, the tent flap burst open and Zachary stepped in, trailing cold air behind him.
Every soldier’s eyes darted behind him–then back at Zachary’s face, dark and unreadable.
Sophie, quick on her feet, rushed forward with a cup of coffee.

“Colonel…”
Zachary took the mug and downed it in one gulp.
He swept his eyes over the gathered men, voice cold and steady:
“The fighting’s over for now.”
“I’m heading back to D.C. tomorrow.”
The lieutenant snapped, voice sharp with anger:
“Sir, with all due respect, no officer leaves the field without direct orders!”
“This isn’t a damn joke!
You’re not just risking your reputation–you’re risking the lives of tens of thousands!”
“And without a commander at the front line, you’re handing our enemies a golden opportunity!”
The officers‘ protests came one after another, pounding like drums against Zachary’s skull.

He finally barked at them to get the hell out.
Sophie tried to step closer, but Zachary shot her a look so cold she froze in place.
“You. Out.”
Sophie’s eyes welled with tears.
“Zachary…”
“OUT!”
It was the first time Zachary had ever raised his voice at her.
Sophie burst into tears and ran from the tent, face buried in her hands.
Zachary stared after her, scowling, but it wasn’t her face he saw behind his eyes.
It was mine.
The way I looked at him–hurt, disappointed, and finally… hollow.
It hit him then.
It wasn’t the cold or the hardship that had broken me.
It was him.

Over and over again, every time he chose Sophie.
Every time he left me standing alone.
He swept everything off his desk in a violent crash, then collapsed into his chair, burying his head in his hands.
He sat there all night, not moving, not speaking.
For the next few nights, the only way he could fall asleep was by clutching the blanket I used to sleep under, breathing in the faint scent of medicine still lingering on it.
But the scent faded, like everything else.
Just like the person he once took for granted-
Gone.
When there was nothing left to hold on to, he couldn’t sleep at all.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw flashes of our life together-
The smiles, the fights, the silent nights full of unspoken words.
Every morning, he woke up with swollen eyes and bloodshot whites.
He didn’t know if it was from the exhaustion-
Or from crying himself blind.
