Chapter 9
That evening, I finally couldn’t take it anymore.

Upton must be a master of psychological warfare–no one could beat him at this game.
I appeared at the study door.
Hearing footsteps, he turned around and asked, “What is it?”
I sneered, “Upton, don’t you want to get married anymore?”
Upton set down his documents, seemingly waiting for whatever I was about to say next.
I’m no business genius–I truly don’t understand Upton’s
methods.
I said, “You’re keeping me locked up here because you’re afraid I’ll ruin your wedding next week, aren’t you? You don’t trust anyone else to watch me. You need to keep an eye on me yourself to feel secure, right? Well, you’re wrong. No woman can tolerate another woman living in her fiancé’s house. If this continues, I guarantee you’ll lose Donna.”
Upton asked, “Are you finished?”
His calm reaction left me feeling powerless.

I said, “Don’t be so full of yourself. You abandoned me abroad for three Christmases–did you ever think about what kind of life I was living? Do you really think I was doing research overseas? What if I was miserable abroad? The old me loved you deeply, but the me now doesn’t love you anymore.”
My words seemed to infuriate him.
The pen in Upton’s hand was crushed out of shape in his grip.
He said angrily, “Hailey, if you don’t want to die, get back to your room right now.”
I took a deep breath and said, “I want to go home. Or send me abroad–I’ll never come back again.”
Suddenly, Upton grabbed me by the throat.
“Say that again.”
I thought he was going to strangle me, but he quickly released me and shoved me back into my room.
