Chapter 6
Cyrus was dumbfounded, as if he’d been struck by lightning. “But. But I saw the merfolk take you away back then…”
Cyrus‘ mother replied gravely, “That was just an act we put on, one that we decided on together with the merfolk!
“Cyrus, our ancestors had once offended a powerful dark sorcerer, and so we were cursed. From then on, all the werewolves in our pack would have genetic defects. The merfolk are the only ones who can help to resolve this!
“The fact that we have genetic defects can’t be known by outsiders, or our enemies would exploit it as a weakness. That’s why it’s always been kept under lock and key, and our research had always been held in secret.
“Because we once helped Marina’s parents, they agreed to aid our tribe in curing the genetic illness… On top of that, the one who healed your genetic illness was Marina, using her own flesh and blood!
“We already owe the merfolk too much, and look what you’ve done!”
Cyrus was stunned for a very long time, before he asked, in a voice that was so small it was almost imperceptible, “But why didn’t she tell me the truth…? After all this time…”
Cyrus‘ father sighed heavily, gritting his teeth. “Because there’s been a traitor amongst us! The whole reason Marina came ashore was to find the traitor too!”
The research lab was plunged into silence, leaving only the light sound of popping bubbles coming from my body.
Cyrus arranged for his parents to go rest, while he came to the basement that I lived in all this time. There were no lights installed, so he walked in with a lamp in
hand.
The moment he pushed the door open, the overwhelming scent of dampness and mold came flooding out in waves, and his expression immediately darkened.
