Chapter 7
“Rube, why did you stop?”
Louisa slithered up to him like a snake, pressing her body against his. Normally, Ruben would have pulled her into his arms without hesitation. But now, he stood frozen like a statue without moving.
Then, his body convulsed without warning, and he collapsed while vomiting blood in violent, heaving gasps.
Scarlet stains spread across the bed sheets. Louisa’s terrified screams rang through the room as he struggled to his feet, still stumbling toward the garage.
Surely, nothing had happened to Estelle! He had to go looking for her himself!
As he got into the car, his gaze landed on the envelope Estelle had left for him, still sitting in the passenger seat.
A scaring pain twisted through his chest as if his insides were being torn apart. He gasped for air, but every breath only sent the agony deeper into his bloodstream.
Why had he let Estelle fly alone? Why hadn’t he arranged for experienced pilots to accompany her? Just why?
Frankly, he knew he had been too distracted. He was too consumed with planning the twins‘ birthday celebration as so many details had demanded his attention. And somehow, ensuring his pregnant wife’s safety hadn’t been one of them.
The search lasted two full days. Although they scoured hundreds of miles of ocean, no survivor was found.
The rescue team spoke cautiously, choosing their words carefully as they were wary of triggering Ruben. After all, everyone knew how deeply he loved Estelle.
“Mr. Daye, when a plane goes down over open waters, the chances of survival are almost nonexistent. I’m afraid… Mrs. Daye may not have made it.”
Tears streamed down Ruben’s face as his body crumpled. He would have collapsed to the ground if not for the people holding him up.
But he suddenly lunged at the words “may not have made it“. His eyes burned red with rage while fisting the rescuer’s collar.
He screamed, “Shut your mouth! How dare you curse my wife? She’s not dead! She’s not! You don’t get to say that!”
It took Phil everything he had to pry Ruben away. He stood there for a long time, breathing unevenly.

The envelope was the last thing Estelle had left him before she left. Now that he had no reason to keep living, he would open his final gift before he died.
