Chapter 38
Seeing how flustered and anxious Kathleen was, Shawn actually found himself a little surprised.
Had she always been this helpful?
It almost felt like she was stepping in just to help him out because his family wanted him to be married and have a child before he died.
However, the thing was, they had no real history, no bond that should have compelled her to do any of this.
He couldn’t for the life of him figure out when he’d ever done anything so significant for her that she’d feel she owed him anything.

After lunch, no one left immediately. There would still be dinner later that evening, so the afternoon was free for everyone to do as they liked.
There were guest rooms available, so anyone tired could go lie down for a bit.
Kathleen sat at the backyard pavilion, tossing breadcrumbs into the fish pond while quietly texting Chelsey. She tried to comfort her, though in truth, her nerves were tightening.
Everything about the plan felt rushed. She had no idea whether Colin would actually be able to bring Chelsey out.
Suddenly, she spotted Shawn rushing out of the house in a hurry. He didn’t even notice her sitting there, but she decided against calling out to him.
By evening, the courtyard lights had come on, casting a soft golden glow over the old architecture. The whole place looked even more peaceful.
“Kat, have you seen Shawn?” Judy asked as she approached.
Kathleen shook her head. “I just saw him leave this afternoon. He’s not back yet?”
“Where did he go?” Judy asked.
“I’m not sure. He seemed in a hurry, and I didn’t manage to stop him,” Kathleen commented as she pulled out her phone. “I’ll give him a call.”
“No need,” Judy said with a furrowed brow. “His phone’s off.”
Kathleen still gave it a shot, and sure enough, it went straight to voicemail.
Where had he gone? As he hadn’t come back all afternoon, a sick feeling settled in her chest. Had something happened to him?
“I’m going to look for him,” she suggested quickly.
“You wouldn’t even know where to start,” Judy replied, trying to keep calm but visibly anxious.
“I’ll check first.” Kathleen wouldn’t feel at ease unless she looked for him herself.
Everyone in the Vance family was clearly getting worried.
Kathleen had just approached the door when Henry appeared, saying, “There’s no need to do so. He informed me that he had gone home to rest. He won’t be back for dinner.”
Everyone visibly relaxed when they heard that.

However, Judy couldn’t help but scold him under her breath, “He’s already an adult, yet he still makes us worried.”
Then, she turned to Kathleen. “Check on him after dinner, will you?”
“I’ll go now instead,” Kathleen offered.
“That works too,” Judy nodded and arranged for a driver to take Kathleen home.
On the ride back, Kathleen couldn’t stop thinking. Seeing that Shawn had left in such a hurry, there had to be a reason.
Was it his health?
That thought alone made her worried,
When she got home and unlocked the door, the house was completely dark. Not a single light was on, and there was no sign of Shawn either.
He lied!
Just then, her phone rang. It was Judy.
Kathleen took a breath before answering. “Hello, Judy.”
“Are you home?”
“Yeah, I just arrived”
“How about Shawn?”
“He’s asleep,” she lied quickly.

“Alright, then. Get something to eat and rest after that.”
“I will.”
After hanging up, Kathleen walked to Shawn’s room and slowly pushed the door open. She was not surprised that he wasn’t there.
She called his phone again. This time, it rang, but there was still no answer.
Colin was still on his way to Chelsey’s place, and Kathleen had no idea if anyone was with Shawn.
The only other person close to him was Jeremy. He was abroad, and she wasn’t sure whether he’d know where Shawn had gone. However, she still dialled Jeremy’s phone.
