Chapter 9
Lena used to always wait for Micah on the couch. She would run over with a smile to greet him the moment she heard him come through the door. However, the house was silent now, and the lights weren’t even turned on.
A wave of dread washed over Micah. He quickly set the cake aside and turned on all the lights as he searched through every room for any sign of Lena.
“Baby, where are you? Don’t scare me. I know I was wrong today. Baby, I swear it was something important. Please come out. I’ll explain everything.”
His voice echoed through the house.
He then quickly pulled out his phone and tried calling her.
“We’re sorry. The number you’ve dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later.”
But Micah didn’t give up and made several more calls.
The result was the same.
He finally returned to the living room and noticed a box sitting on th

coffee table. He rushed over to the table only to find a divorce certificate lying next
Micah read the paper with trembling hands. Then, he saw his and Lena’s name on it.
How could it be? When had they gotten divorced?
He tried to recall everything that had happened lately.
Was it that document? The one he had signed in a rush without even reading it carefully.
Micah instantly panicked. He couldn’t understand why Lena would want to divorce him.
His eyes were then drawn to the box next to the certificate. He clung to the hope that maybe this surprise him somehow with a gift.
He opened the box, and his eyes widened. His mind went blank as soon as he saw what was inside.
It was a tiny five–month–old fetus curled up in formalin.
Micah could no longer hold himself up and collapsed to his knees.
That was his child–it was his and Lena’s child!
He could no longer hold back his tears as he clutched the box to his chest and broke down.
He could still vividly remember when Lena had told him she was pregnant.

“Micah, I have good news for you.” She had tried to stand on her tiptoes and covered his eyes from behind him.
“Baby, what are you going to show me? Why are you acting all mysterious?” He had played along as she slowly led him to the living room.
“Ta–da! I’m pregnant!” She handed him an ultrasound report.
Micah was so excited that he pulled her into a tight hug. “We’re having a baby! I’m going to be a dad!”
He couldn’t help but touch the child through the glass jar.
The joy he felt back then was real, as was the anticipation for the child to be born. He and Lena had filled the nursery with various things for the past few months.
He couldn’t fathom why she would be so cruel now. Why would she be so cruel as to end their baby’s life at five months just to leave him?
“Why? Why would you leave me?”
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
Laris simply entered the passcode and walked in when she saw that Micah hadn’t opened the door.
“How did you get in here?” Micah asked.
Laris was slightly stunned at his question. “It’s still the same password you used when we were together.”
Micah fell silent.
Laris walked over to him and asked, “Micah, what’s wrong?”
His face was darkened, and he didn’t respond.
She then spotted the glass jar on the coffee table and the baby inside before she let out a terrified scream.
“Shut up!” Micah’s words made her immediately cover her mouth in shock. She lowered her gaze and avoided looking at the jar. “Micah, Lena, she…” But he cut her off before she could finish. “Get out.”

Laris tightened her grip on her bag. “Micah, I came only because I was worried about you.”
But as if he hadn’t heard her at all, Micah exclaimed, “I said, get out!”
