Chapter 5
Early in my career, I got screwed over by a coworker and lost six months‘ salary.
I sat in my crappy studio apartment eating ramen for weeks, swearing I’d never let anyone play me like that again.
So every time I moved offices, the first thing I did was install hidden cameras.]
I packaged up the video clips and all the documents, then sent everything to corporate.
Within an hour, they responded saying they’d send an investigator.
Watching me handle business, Jake’s expression went ice–cold.[]
“Moe, when did you become so ruthless?“]
I shut my laptop and stood up: “I’m not the one who changed.”
“You lost the right to judge me the second you started screwing River.“]]
Jake went rigid, then frantically blocked my path:
“Look, she said she had cramps and needed to grab stuff from home. I had no idea she was gonna strip down like that.”
ce.”
“I swear it only happened once.‘
I laughed bitterly. If I believed guys like him, I never would’ve made it this far.
“Three strikes and you’re out. You don’t get any more chances.“]
“Oh, and when you get home, don’t forget to sign those divorce papers.”
“You’re just being dramatic, right?” Jake’s forehead creased. “Fine, I’ll make River move out tonight. Will that make you happy?”
The disgust in my eyes must’ve hit a nerve because he suddenly grabbed my wrists.[]
“What about your mistakes? When did you start hooking up with Preston?”
I struggled to pull back, but he pinned me against the wall.
“Moe, fine–I’ll tell everyone we’re married. Isn’t that what you always wanted?”
So he did know what I’d been hoping for all this time.[]
My assistant knocked, hesitantly saying I should come see what was happening outside.[]
Jake finally let go of my hands.
River was still out there playing victim, telling everyone how I’d been sabotaging her work and threatening to expose me online.
Said I was a misogynist who hated other women and refused to support female advancement.[]
Our team was eating it up.
“She’s got resting bitch face 24/7, like we all owe her money.”
“She’s totally different around Mr. Harrison though. Bet she’s been crushing on him this whole time.”
“Didn’t she say she was married? Talk about wanting your cake and eating it too–trying to steal our girl’s man.“].
River put on this fake modest act: “Don’t talk about her like that, guys.”
“Besides, Jake and Taren’t even together yet.“]
“Kay word being ‘yet.” Someone nudged River’s shoulder. “Mr. Harrison treats you like a princess.“[]
River blushed all pretty and innocent.[]
I almost laughed out loud.[]
I’d bet money she knew about me and Jake from day one. She was probably the one who broke into HR to snoop through our files.
Throwing herself at a married man and then acting clueless about it–absolutely disgusting[]

Chapter 5
Jake stood behind me looking uncomfortable.]
River obviously knew about our
drriage, but she was still talking like this.
Before River could say anything else, Jake cut her off:[]
“Everyone back to work.”
“River, knock off the gossip.“]
River huffed and stalked back to her desk.
A few people shot me dirty looks.
Whatever. I’d be getting promoted soon anyway.[]
Back at the hotel, Preston texted that he’d arrive tomorrow morning.[]
Corporate’s initial decision: fire both River and Jake, plus formal written warnings on their permanent records.
Probably financial penalties too.
I let out this huge sigh of relief.
Funny how everything started falling into place once I decided to get divorced.]]
Just as I was drifting off, Jake called.
