Chapter 6
“Moe, since when did you learn to play hard to get like some teenage girl?“]
I could hear River’s voice in the background:
“Exactly, Moe. At your age, you shouldn’t be making rash decisions.”
“Jake and I are nothing serious. Men just lose control sometimes–I don’t even care about it.“[]
“You should stop wasting money on hotels and come home. The three of us could play cards or something.“]
The sheer audacity almost made me laugh out loud.
Jake sounded irritated, like he was pushing River away.
“Moe, River’s moving out soon, and I’ll make sure she takes responsibility for the Greenfield mess.”
s.“]
I raised an eyebrow:]
“And then what?”
“What do you mean?“[]
“You’ll help her find another job, help her pay damages, maybe even get her a nice apartment, right?“[]
Must’ve hit the nail on the head because there was this long silence before he said:
“She’s just a kid.“[
I actually laughed.]
“Jake, I was ‘just a kid‘ too when I became your boss.”
“Oh, and you might want to start preparing yourself.”
I hung up. Done with this bullshit.
Meeting with Preston meant getting up early to do my makeup properly.
While picking out clothes, I realized I hadn’t bought a decent dress in years.
I spent forever digging through my closet before finding a soft pink A–line skirt.[]
Would people think I was trying too hard to look young?
! hesitated, then caught my reflection in the bathroom mirror.
Except for some fine lines around my eyes, I looked exactly the same as always.]
Just because I was two years older than Jake, I’d convinced myself I was some middle–aged hag.
Screw that. I put on the skirt.]
The office felt tense when I arrived, I spotted Preston standing by my door from across the room.
Same intimidating presence as always–the kind of guy who made people nervous just by existing.]
I took a deep breath and walked over.[]
“Mr. Hayes, long time no see.”
He looked me up and down, a slight smile playing at his lips.
“You’re in much better shape than I expected.”
River and the other employees stared at us in shock, immediately starting to whisper.]
I introduced Preston to everyone:
“This is Preston Hayes, director from corporate. He’s here to investigate the Greenfield situation.”
“He was my friend in college and my former boss.”
Everyone perked up hearing “corporate” and started clapping politely.]

Chapter 6
River went pale and stepped back.
She obviously hadn’t expected this to be such a big deal. Jake probably told her it was no big deal, that he could handle it.
I watched her panic and smiled slightly.
Thanks to the recordings and documentation, the investigation went smoothly.]
Once everything was confirmed and the losses deemed irreversible, Preston announced we’d have a meeting that afternoon to discuss consequences.[]
Since I was playing host, I took Preston to this amazing private chef place I loved for lunch.]
Didn’t expect to run into Jake and River there.]
Jake pointed at Preston and demanded: “Who the hell is this guy?!“]
He’d obviously been up all night stressing about those divorce papers. Takes half a day off and finds me out with another man.[]
River naturally latched onto Jake’s arm:
“Don’t get upset, Jake. I’m sure Moe and Mr. Hayes are just friends.“]
Preston let out this cold laugh:
“Moe, are homewreckers always this bold now?“[]
He didn’t say it loud, but everyone in the restaurant heard him.]
River immediately turned red and dropped her hands.[]
Jake acted like he didn’t hear anything, just stared at my skirt.[]
I sighed: “Just sign the divorce papers already. Then you two can be together openly.“|[]
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone about us. We can pretend none of this ever happened.“]]
Preston’s eyes lit up with interest.
Jake clenched his fists, practically snarling: “I’m not getting divorced, and you’re not hooking up with anyone else!”
Suddenly, River tugged on his sleeve and looked up at him with those big innocent eyes:[]
“Jake… I’m pregnant.“]
