Chapter 9
He looked up suddenly, his eyes lighting up with desperate hope.[]
“Moe, it’s really you!“[]
“I’ve missed you so much. I know I screwed up–why did you block me?”
“Just give me one more chance to make it right, okay?“]
He tried to step closer, but Preston blocked him with one arm.]
“Hey there, ex–hubby. Moe and I are getting married soon–want us to save you a table?“]
Seeing me twist the ring on my finger, Jake went ghost white, his voice shaking:[]
“Moe, have you forgotten what we went through together? That life–or–death moment?“[]

Same old bullshit. My eyes went cold.
“Jake,

saved my life once and I was grateful. But you burned through every bit of that gratitude yourself.“[]
“I gave you three years of loyalty, you gave me betrayal. I gave you a clean divorce, you gave me threats.“]
“We’re even now.”
Preston snorted and wrapped his arm around me as we walked

But then I heard someone screaming behind us.]
“Help! Someone jumped in the water!“]]
I spun around in disbelief–Jake had vanished.
People were clustering on the bank, but no one dared jump in.]
Preston shoved his phone at me: “That manipulative bastard!”
I grabbed his arm in panic, but he was already diving in.
“Preston! Don’t!“]
Both of them disappeared under the water.

“You saved Moe’s life once. Now I’ve saved yours.“[]
“We’re square, ex–hubby. No reason to keep harassing her.“]
Jake’s face crumpled as he let his hands fall, closing his eyes like all hope had died.]
At the end of the month, Preston and I had this huge wedding.
Tons of coworkers came to congratulate us, but their eyes kept drifting to Jake sitting alone at his designated table.[]
River had already spread our whole story as office gossip.
Everyone finally realized I’d been the wronged wife all along.
Maybe out of guilt, they all clustered around me talking trash about Jake and River.[]
Within minutes, Jake’s table was covered with a deck of cards.[]

The kind River loved to play with.
Jake stared at those cards for the longest time, then started laughing.
He glanced over at me in my wedding dress giving my speech, then shakily got up and left.
Outside, the sun was blazing, having long since dried up that old storm.]

I wasn’t afraid of rainy days anymore.
