Suddenly, Micah grabbed my wrist. Caught off guard, I staggered, nearly losing my balance.
After regaining my footing, I yanked my arm free and snapped, “Micah, are you out of your mind? If you’re going to have a breakdown, go have it in a Psych ward!”
“Why are you here with Jared?” he demanded.
His accusing stare only made my patience wear thinner.
“What does that have to do with you?”
Micah clenched his teeth. “Tabitha, are you two plotting against me?”
I rolled my eyes in disbelief. Was he seriously that delusional?
Then again, guilt had a way of breeding paranoia.
I smirked and nodded. “Exactly. Jared and I are conspiring to knock you off that chairman’s throne. Someone like you doesn’t deserve the power you have. Heaven forbid you drive the company straight into the ground.”
“You!”
Micah’s face contorted in fury as he raised his hand to strike. But before he could make contact, Jared stepped in, seizing his wrist.
Jared stood a full head taller than Micah, and the way he looked down at him was nothing short of intimidating.
“Micah, if you even think about touching her, I promise you won’t leave here standing.”
With Jared blocking my way like a shield, I couldn’t help but feel safe.
Micah let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Wow, Jared. I didn’t expect you to go after my ex. I guess you really don’t have standards.”
His words cut deep, sparking fury within me.
“Jared, please move.”
When he didn’t budge, I stepped out from behind him.
“Micah, I used to think you were just a jerk, but now I see you’re rotten all the way through. And don’t forget, it was I who left you standing at the altar. You have no right to act like I’m the one who was discarded.”
I turned to Piper. My voice was dripping with contempt. “Eating shit once is bad enough, but digging it up and swallowing it again after ten years is downright pathetic. Some dogs certainly never learn.”
The color drained from both their faces.
Micah’s eyes blazed with fury, like a lion about to pounce.
Piper was even more unhinged. Her hand shot up, ready to strike me across the face.
They were clearly made for each other, both quick to throw a punch at the slightest provocation.
All of a sudden, a sharp smack cracked through the room.
But this time, it wasn’t me. Piper’s cheek took the blow.
I swung with all my strength, and she stumbled, barely catching herself.
She lunged to retaliate, but I caught her off guard and struck her again.
“I’ve been dying to do that for a long time. How dare a homewrecker like you strut around here so boldly? Where do you even get the nerve?”
My words rang out across the restaurant, catching the attention of both diners and staff.
Piper’s face flushed crimson as she shot back, “You’re talking nonsense, Tabitha! You’re the real homewrecker here!”
I smiled coldly. “If I hadn’t left Micah at the altar, do you really think you’d have the chance to talk back to me now? Maybe you should eat more walnuts. Big boobs won’t make up for an empty head.”
With that sharp remark, I turned and walked away.
As I stepped outside, Jared caught up to me.
“I’ll escort you home.”
“It’s alright. I’ll just call an Uber.”
Jared smiled, clearly at a loss. “Tabitha, can’t you just give me a chance? Let us at least get to know each other.”
Knowing that Jared and Micah used to be best friends, it was clear they shared certain traits. Otherwise, they never would have formed such a close bond. “No thanks,” I said firmly. “I don’t need to.”
“Come on. Don’t you think being with me would drive Micah crazy?”
Jared’s serious demeanor made me chuckle despite myself.
Part of me wanted to get back at Micah, but more than that, I just wanted to stay out of trouble.
“No, it’s fine. Goodbye.”
Back home, I had just stepped out of the shower when Greta sent me a screenshot from Twitter.
It showed Piper and Micah cuddled up in a selfie, a beautiful cake, and a bouquet of red roses beside them.
After all the twists and turns, it’s still you, Mr. Micah Turner. Here’s to the rest of our lives together.”
Greta followed up with a voice message, letting all her frustration spill out. “I’m done with those two. Piper’s nothing but a desperate homewrecker clawing her way up, yet she struts around like she owns the whole damn place!“
