Chapter 20
I widened my eyes, feeling my face burn. “How can you say I should go to the hospital? If the doctor asks how I got hurt, what am I supposed to say?” I said, feeling embarrassed.
Luther chewed thoughtfully, then put down his spoon with a sly grin.
Before he could say another word, I quickly stood up. Even though no one could see my face, it was probably as red as a beet.
“Don’t say it,” I warned firmly. After setting down my bowl and spoon, I headed back to my room.
As Lucy came out of the kitchen, she noticed my bowl was barely touched and glanced suspiciously at Luther. “Why didn’t she eat?” she asked.
Through the slightly open door, I heard him shout, “She said it doesn’t taste good.”
I couldn’t help but think how much of a bastard Luther was.
Lucy usually treated me well. I stepped out and quickly explained, “Don’t listen to him. That’s not true.”
I sat back down at the table, picked up my bowl, and continued eating breakfast.
“You don’t have to go to the company today. Take the day off and rest at home…” Luther said.
“Keep your voice down,” I said, feeling embarrassed.
On the other hand, Luther was completely unabashed. I glanced nervously toward the kitchen, afraid Lucy might overhear.
“Do you want the day off or not?” he asked.
“Yes! Thank you, Mr. Stone,” I replied quickly. After all, who wouldn’t want a day off?
Then I suddenly remembered and added, “Oh, and I still need to pick up Ms. Larkin’s clothes.”
Luther said, “Have the driver get it.”
“No need. I can pick it up myself,” I insisted.
If Adeline saw the driver delivering her clothes, she might assume I was afraid of her.
Before leaving, Luther leaned in and whispered in my ear, “You should get checked at the hospital. I’m serious.”
I nodded and replied, “Got it.”
Lucy saw us whispering by the door and gave a knowing smile.
After finishing up, I said, “Lucy, I’m stepping out for a bit.”
Lucy asked, “Will you be back for lunch?”
“No, I’ll just grab something quick outside,” I replied.
Driving turned out to be a challenge for me too. After sliding into the driver’s seat, took a moment to steady myself before turning on the engine.
I headed straight to the dry cleaner. Last night, besides all the trouble Luther caused ne, he also shared a lot of useful advice about navigating the workplace.
Honestly, his tips were more practical and far more insightful than the lofty principles and petty tricks Ryan had tried to teach me.
After picking up the clothes, I went directly to the hotel where Adeline was staying. I stood outside the hotel room. Voices came from inside, but as soon as I knocked, everything fell silent.
I called her, but she didn’t answer. I left a message but got no reply.
I knew Adeline was deliberately making me wait outside her door. If it had been before, I might have lost my temper. But after listening to Luther’s advice, I sent her a WhatsApp message.
“Ms. Larkin, Mr. Stone is waiting for me to get back to a meeting. Since you’re not in the room, I’ve left your clothes at the front desk,” I typed.
Just as I sent the message, I heard footsteps approaching from inside.
The door opened, and Adeline greeted me with a fake smile. “Ms. Miller, sorry to keep you waiting. I stayed up too late talking with Mr. Stone last night and overslept. Thank you,” she said.
Her insincerity made my skin crawl.
Eat if I took the bait, I would be the one who lost.
I handed her the clothes with a professional smile and said, “Thank you for keeping him company. He slept well after getting back last night. I won’t keep you any longer. Goodbye,”
With that, I turned and left, leaving her behind.
I straightened my posture, reflecting that the guidance I had received had even sharpened my ability to provoke with confidence.
When my phone rang, I saw Tania’s number and answered, “Hello?”

Tania asked, “Why did you reject that friend request last night?”
