Chapter 6 New Project
Mr. Hall raised an eyebrow. “Although you clearly lack both manners and boundaries–judging by how you went through a coworker’s belongings and interrupted a meeting and all–you did help me find the right person for the job. April, you’ll be the project manager for the new project. Don’t mess it up.”
Once the meeting wrapped up, Lindsay was fired. The reason? She went through a project participant’s documents without permission. As such, she was suspected of attempting to steal company secrets.
When it came to making accusations, Mr. Hall was a seasoned pro.
As for me, I achieved my short–term life goal. That very evening, I received word from my apartment complex that the lockdown had ended. I could go home now. Everything was going great, yet Mr. Hall didn’t seem very happy. I returned to Mr. Hall’s place, packed up my things, and got ready to leave.
He grabbed my wrist.
“Are you in that much of a hurry to go?” Mr. Hall asked with red ears.
He was practically burning up, but he still tried to act aloof. “You don’t want to stay in a place like this when it’s free? Are you stupid?”
“Uh… But this isn’t my house. I have to leave eventuaily.”
Mr. Hall’s gaze began to waver. “It could be…”
“What?”
He took a deep breath. “I didn’t get to finish what I wanted to say in the car last time.”
“What did you want to say?”
“Don’t go back.” Looking into my eyes, he continued, “My place is missing a lady of the house. Would you consider filling that role?”
I paused to think. “Would I still need to clean the house?”
“No.”
“Who will make tea and serve drinks?”
“I will.”
“Who will print the company documents?”
“I’ll do it.”
“Who’s going to reply to irrelevant emails?”
After a short pause, Mr. Hall answered, “Me.”
“Being a part of your family won’t affect my salary, right?”
“It won’t!”
“Well, if you’re driving me to work every day, will I still get a transportation allowance-
“April Barnett.” He was speaking through clenched teeth at this point.
“Yeah?”
“You’re really ruining the mood.”
“Oi:. Then, should I just leave?”
He paused for a long time before finally declaring, “You’ll get your transportation allowance. As a matter of fact, you’ll get double the regular amount–straight from my personal account!”
A month later, I passed the headquarters‘ evaluation and was officially transferred to the project management office as the project manager of the new project. Sylvester organized yet another meeting. As the person in charge of the project, I presented my completed proposal and received unanimous approval from the company executives.
That evening, after work, Sylvester sneaked into my new office. “April, are you working overtime again tonight?”
His tone was full of resentment.
As I was busy reviewing resumés from HR, I replied without looking up, “Yup. You can go home without me.”
“No. It’s been three days!” Sylvester gritted his teeth. “You’ve worked overtime for three days straight! I will not allow you to work overtime tonight!”
Пooked at him in confusion. “Do I need the CEO’s approval to work overtime now?”
He went quiet for a moment. “No.”
I sighed in relief.
Then, he added coldly, “But you do need your boyfriend’s approval!”
I stared at him helplessly.
Sylvester had gotten so clingy since we started dating.
“Boyfriends need dates.” Sylvester turned my face toward him. “April, stop looking at your screen and just look at your boyfriend for once!”
I couldn’t help laughing and patted his head in reassurance. Unexpectedly, Sylvester took it as an invitation and leaned in closer. “Can I have a kiss?”
“No, not at the office.”
“Just for a second…”
“Stop it. Mmph! Didn’t you say a… second!”
Ten minutes later, he finally stopped. He contentedly wrapped his arms around me and pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead. His lips were warm, though his voice was warmer. “April, meeting you is the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
