Chapter 2
I left the wolf fortress with the bond–sealing deal and handed it to Aaron.
He looked at me with disdain, as if certain I had schemed to force him into this. He reached to open the deal, but I placed my hand over his, smiling gently.
“Let’s look at it tomorrow. There will be a surprise.”
Aaron frowned. “What’s the difference? Whether I open it today or tomorrow, it’s still going to be your name on it. Did the thought of becoming my Luma finally drive you mad?”
I was happy.
Because, I finally saw you alive again.
I smiled. “I think you’re the best person in the world. Whoever becomes your Luna will surely be happy.”
“Go back to the packhouse,” he scoffed, turning away. If I didn’t know he didn’t love me, I might have thought he was shy,
We walked back to the packhouse side by side, and a few pack members walked ahead of us. I overheard some she–wolves talking
“Tonight, there’s a meteor shower. You can see a once–in–a–lifetime meteor from Ravenstone Bridge in the town. It’s said that mates who watch it together will love each other for three lifetimes!”
I suddenly remembered the last life. I had also heard this and eagerly asked Aaron to take me to Ravenstone Bridge.
Back then, Aaron had looked at me coldly, with a trace of sarcasm on his face.
“One lifetime with you is bad enough. You want three? What meteor shower nonsense? Foolish superstition. If you want to waste your time, go alone,”
That cold gaze, even in a past life, had sent a chill through me.
I lowered my head silently.
But this time, Aaron spoke in his usual indifferent tone.
“Do you want to go? I’ll take you tonight. Consider it an apology–after we seal the bond, I won’t have time to visit your parents‘ graves with you.”
I looked up at him in surprise- unexpected, yet somehow expected.
Aaron had always been like this: his words sharp, but his heart softer than anyone else’s.
He didn’t love me, yet he still risked his life to save me three times.
The first time, when I was attacked by rogues, he protected me, but his right hand was deeply slashed by their claws. The wound was so severe that he could never draw a bow again.
The second time, I was poisoned by vampire toxin. He climbed the frozen mountains alone to beg the Snow Witch for an antidote, nearly breaking his leg in the process.
The third time, during the fire in the wolf fortress, he died trying to save me.
When I asked why he kept saving me, he only said, “You’re helpless. Who else is going to protect you?”
Aaron was everything I could ever want, except for one thing–he didn’t love me.
I knew that after today, there would be no more connection between Aaron and me.
Even if we went to Ravenstone Bridge and witnessed a once–in–a–lifetime meteor shower, we would never be like the legends, together for eternity.
But I still pushed back the tears threatening to fall and smiled brightly, as if my smile had no value at all.
“Alright, let’s go watch the meteor shower together.”
“Alpha! Wait!”
Someone stopped our carriage halfway. It was Ellie’s sister, Clara, saying that Ellie had a headache and wanted to see Aaron.
Aaron frowned when he heard, then immediately walked ahead. After a few steps, he turned back and looked at me.
“Ellie’s not feeling well. I need to check on her. You go back to the packhouse. We’ll meet at Ravenstone Bridge tonight.”
I nodded. “Okay.”

He seemed surprised. “You used to hate me going to see her. Why the sudden change of mind?”
I opened my mouth, but he cut me off with a bitter laugh. “Well, I guess now it doesn’t matter since we’re about to seal the mate bond. She’s no longer a threat to you.”
He turned and disappeared into the forest, never seeing the sorrow in my eyes.
The truth was, I had never resented his love for Ellie.
Once, I had found out she was involved with another pack Alpha, and after further investigation, I learned she wasn’t innocent. That was when I had tried to keep Aaron from getting too close to her.
But he knew nothing of this. After her death, he suffered for ten years.
If I had to choose, I would rather see him happy with Ellie than watch him destroy himself–and die for me in the end.
