Chapter 1
Before returning to the packhouse, I sought out the pack elders to ask about severing the pack link.
Aaron’s mother, the former Luna of the pack, Lima Grace, had prepared a feast–every dish my favorite.
I stood beside the table, touched. “Luna, I should be the one cooking for you. Why did you go through all this trouble?”
Lama looked at me and smiled so widely that her mouth couldn’t close. “You’re always so thoughtful. Come on, show me the bond–sealing deal with Aaron I’ve been waiting for so long, and now you’re finally going to be our pack’s Luna,”
The Alpha, noticing Aaron wasn’t with me, scowled.
“That boy didn’t escort you back? Even after securing the bond–sealing deal, he still doesn’t know how to cherish you? Just wait till he returns–I’ll give him a plece of my mind!”
The Alpha and Lama’s genuine concern made my throat tighten.
After my parents died in battle, I became an orphan. The Alpha and Luna, long–time friends of my parents, took me in, raised me, gave me love, and everything I had.
I had always been obedient, but this time, I was about to defy them.
I looked at them solemnly and said, “Alpha, Luma, I’m not going to seal the mate bond with Aaron. Tomorrow, I’m going to Stonevale. I’m leaving the pack, and from now on, I won’t be around. You must take care of yourselves.”
Luna froze, then panicked, “Your parents died defending our borders. You grew up here–the Ashfang Pack is your home! Where will you go? Did Aaron hurt you because of Ellie, and that’s why you don’t want to seal the mate bond with him?”
She continued. “Please don’t think that way. He really cares about you, or he wouldn’t have risked his life to save you twice. Every year, before your birthday, he spends so much time gathering all kinds of treasures for you. I know you care about him too. You learned how to cook for him, massaged his injured hand every night. If you seal the bond, you’ll be happy! Besides, Ellie is a scheming she–wolf. We can’t let her win. Don’t leave the pack in anger!”
They had said the same things to me in my past life.
In the end, I lost my husband, and they lost their son. Everyone regretted it for the rest of their lives.
I gently wiped away the tears from Lima’s eyes and spoke.
“Luna, a forced love is never sweet. I’m not the one Aaron desires, Aaron’s heart belongs to someone else. I never should have pressured him into making. me his Luna. I had a dream last night, I dreamed that he sealed the mate bond with me, but he refused to see me. He was consumed with pack affairs, working himself to the bone, hurting himself in the process. The food I made for him, he wouldn’t eat. Even when he fell ill, he wouldn’t let me take care of him. He said that the pain I brought him outweighed the happiness. And in the end…he died saving me at thirty.”
At this point, the pain in my chest made it hard to breathe.
Luna was stunned. “But… that was just a dream. Ava, Aaron won’t die.”
I sniffled and forced a smile.
“Alpha, Lama… dreams are warnings. I’d rather never be his mate than watch him die. He’s the pack Alpha, but so much is out of his control. At least in this…let him choose.”
Chutching Luna’s hands, I begged, “I’ve already severed my pack link. Please…let me go. I’ll never forget your kindness. I’ll repay it a thousandfold.”
The Alpha exhaled sharply and helped me up.
Luna wiped away her tears and handed me a large sum of money.
“Ava, since you’ve made up your mind, I will support you. But remember, no matter what happens, the pack will always be your home.”
Tears welled up in my eyes, and I embraced Luna. “Thank you, Luna.”
As long as I severed my ties with Aaron, the tragedy from my past life wouldn’t repeat itself. He would live a long life, and the former Alpha and Luna wouldn’t be heartbroken and hate me to the core.
This time… everyone would have a happy ending.
Perhaps I had already fulfilled the second regret on Aaron’s list.
