Chapter 12
Was Rebecca really clamoring for a divorce just because he hadn’t come home to care for her after she’d had a dip in the river? Did she feel that hostile toward Giselle? Was their marriage a joke to her?
Stephan was so angry that the veins in his forehead bulged. He grabbed the divorce agreement and was about to flip through it when Rebecca finally answered the phone.
She asked coldly, “What?”
“Are you using divorce to threaten me this time? Do you really need to go this far?” Stephan snapped.
Rebecca remained calm in the face of his anger. She picked up a remote and pressed a button to draw the curtains. Then, she stretched lazily before answering, “of
course not.”
Stephan relaxed slightly when he heard that. Then, what she said next made his heart shoot to his throat again. She said, “Our marriage is already over. Why would I need to threaten you?”
Over?
He barked out an exasperated laugh, his gaze dark. “You think it’s over just because you say it is? I won’t sign the divorce agreement! Never!”

So, he’d yet to look through the agreement, Rebecca headed to the table and picked up her coffee, taking a sip. “Don’t be so sure of yourself. I’d advise you to go through the agreement before saying anything else.”
She sounded so nonchalant that Stephan suddenly panicked. He clenched his fists, crumpling the papers in his hand. After a moment of hesitation, he decided against arguing with Rebecca and flipped open the agreement.
It clearly stated that the reason for divorce was infidelity on one party’s part and that all marital assets would be divided equally according to the law. And on the last page of the agreement, his signature was there, clear as day!
Stephan’s mind went blank for a split second when he saw it. His first thought was that someone had forged his signature, and his blood boiled. “Forgery is against the law, Rebecca! There’s no way this agreement is valid!”
Forgery?
Rebecca couldn’t help chuckling at that. She recalled what had happened on the day she’d gotten him to sign the agreement. She supposed she could understand how he felt at the moment and patiently explained everything to him.
“Get a professional to verify the authenticity of the signature if you don’t believe me. See whether you’re the one who signed the agreement.”
Stephan was thoroughly panicked now. He stared at his signature and tried to detect any inconsistencies in it, but it was identical to his usual signatures, whether in terms of the pressure or flow.
He felt like the air had been sucked from his lungs. He didn’t remember signing this at all–had Rebecca tricked him into doing it when he’d been drunk or unprepared?
That had to be it!
Stephan grasped at that last shred of hope and took a deep breath, his tone becoming sharp once again. “You tricked me into signing this when I was unaware! It doesn’t count!”
Rebecca had long since expected this day to come. She dug up the video she’d recorded on the day he’d signed the agreement and sent it to him.
She said, “There’s no changing the fact that we’re divorced. Nothing will turn this around. If you have any objections, wish to contest the agreement, or take things to court, please consult with my lawyer. I’ve authorized him to handle all matters related to the divorce on my behalf. I’m ending this marriage for good, Stephan.“
