Chapter 13
The cold look in Pearl’s eyes shattered Jonah’s heart into pieces. However, he still trudged after them into the tent.
In the meantime, the rescue staff continued to call out anxiously, “Where’s the surgeon?”
Pearl, who had been instructed to lie down, struggled to sit up when she heard the staff. “I’m fine now. I can get on the operating table.”
Sean firmly pushed her back down onto the bed. “Have you forgotten? I’m a surgeon, too. So, just take a break and let me go instead.”
Sean might look young, but there was a certain quality to his voice that gave Pearl a strange sense of comfort. She felt herself calming down as she recalled that Sean had been known as a medical prodigy in their department.
Then, I’ll leave it to your capable hands. I’ll assist you once I recover.”
They exchanged a glance before giving each other a quick high five.
Behind them, Jonah silently clenched his fists as he watched the scene unfold before his eyes. Alas, he was now merely her ex–husband and had no right to feel jealous.
“Hey, Mr, Ex–husband. I’m off to save lives, so feed Pearl something, will you?” Sean snarked disdainfully before leaving the tent.
Sean had no other options at the moment. The rescue team was severely short on manpower because even the driver had been appointed to transport the injured.
Jonah had never been ordered around like some common peasant. Although he was affronted, he felt his anger deflating when it was an order to care for Pearl.
There were limited supplies at hand, so he only managed to whip up a crude version of hot chocolate with some Snickers and milk.
“Drink up. You’ll be able to warm up and recover your blood sugar quickly with this,” Jonah said gently.
The gentle way he was treating her made her feel rather discomfited. So, she raised her hand and reached for the cup. “I’ll drink it myself.”
“I’ll hold the cup for you. You should just drink it through the straw.”
Then, he carefully brought the straw to her lips. Worried she might turn her cheek at his offer, he recalled the anxious way she had acted earlier and added softly, “The more energy you conserve now, the more lives you’ll be able to save later.”
Pearl stopped resisting his help upon hearing those words.
Frankly, Jonah hadn’t eaten anything for nearly a full day. Coupled with his intense digging session that night, he was on the verge of collapsing as well. Still, he held the cup steady, afraid that Pear! might choke if he didn’t.
Jonah had long since washed the grime off his hands, but the cuts and bloodstains weren’t something he could make disappear after a wash.
He had grown up with a silver spoon. When he grew up into an adult, he even became a CEO who was worth billions of dollars. So, to see those pampered hands reduced to such a state…
Well, Pearl couldn’t deny she was somewhat touched. After all, he had never treated her with such care in their four years of marriage. She genuinely didn’t expect him to be so gentle now that they had gotten a divorce.
It was just a shame she had already made up her mind to give up on him. Now, they were merely strangers to one another.
Once she was done with her hot chocolate, Pearl regained some of her strength and immediately tried to get up to assist Sean with his surgery.
“You should rest more!” Jonah exclaimed as he tried to stop her, but Pearl was already up and ready to go.
When her hand brushed against his, she couldn’t help but furrow her brows. “Why are you so hot?”
“I-”
Jonah had barely gotten a word out when another urgent voice came from outside the tent, “Dr. Hamilton, we’ve got another victim!”
Pearl instantly shook Jonah’s hand off and rushed out of the tent without hesitation.
understood her.
Her white coat fluttered behind her as she ran. When Jonah saw her like this, he finally understood what Pearl had meant when she said he had never
This was Pearl, who was brimming with youth and as fearless as she was brilliant. It really was the first time he had ever truly seen her.
