Chapter 16
+25 BORUS
Sydney had been abroad for two years chasing her dreams. While she rarely returned, she kept a close eye on Joanna’s life through social media.
Joanna picked up a new set of fork and knife, and she casually added more food to Sydney’s plate. “I’ll be filing for divorce soon,” she replied calmly. “After that, Jeremy and I will have nothing to do with each other.”
“Thank goodness!” Sydney exclaimed, letting out a huge sigh of relief as she leaned back in her chair. “You finally came to your senses!”
As Joanna’s best friend, Sydney knew how Jeremy treated her during their three–year marriage. To Jeremy, Joanna was nothing more than a free housekeeper and object for his. physical needs.
Before leaving for abroad, Sydney had visited Joanna one evening, and they had gotten so caught up in conversation that Joanna forgot to make dinner. When Jeremy had come home to find no food on the table, he had stormed out without saying a word.
Sydney had thought Jeremy was an absolute jerk and wanted Joanna to divorce him right then, but her friend was too in love with him. Even if she was just his housekeeper and bedwarmer, Joanna had been content with that role.
Joanna had chuckled and finally told Sydney about the marriage contract she and Jeremy had signed three years ago.
Sydney had been stunned, especially when Joanna had tried to defend Jeremy by saying, It was a business arrangement from the start. Jeremy had no obligation to be a real husband to me.”
Remembering the past, Sydney threatened, “Joanna, are you still not seeing things clearly? Because if not, I’ll knock some sense into you right now.
Joanna gave a bitter laugh. “No need. I’m wide awake now.
Sydney rolled her eyes, feeling slightly less angry. Then, Joanna dropped another bombshell.
“Sydney, I’m pregnant.”
“What?” Sydney was dumbfounded for a few seconds. “Whose baby is it? Jeremy’s?”
When Joanna nodded, Sydney’s anger flared up again. “That bastard! Do you know what I overheard those two talking about at the restaurant?”

“What?” Joanna asked.
“Nadine is getting a uterus transplant. She says she wants to have Jeremy’s baby and become a ‘complete woman‘!”
Sydney knew about Nadine’s previous miscarriage and hysterectomy. Even though she didn’t believe Joanna was responsible for that incident, Joanna had claimed it was her doing. Even so, she figured her friend must have had her reasons and stood firmly by her side regardless.
Joanna’s brow furrowed slightly at this
news.
“Does that scumbag know you’re pregnant?” Sydney asked.
When Joanna nodded again, Sydney grew even more furious. “He knows you’re pregnant and still wants to divorce you now?”
Joanna lowered her head. “He wants me to get rid of the baby. He said if I don’t, then after the baby is born, Nadine will be its mother.”
“Over my dead body!” Sydney slammed her hands on the table, overwhelmed with rage.
Joanna looked at her friend’s reaction and chuckled. “Don’t worry. He can’t control me anymore. I’m keeping this baby, and there’s no way in hell I’m letting Nadine have any connection to my child.”
Sydney let out a sigh of relief and nodded. “That’s my girl! You’re finally thinking straight.
“But listen, since you’re pregnant, the law states he can’t file for divorce during pregnancy or nursing periods. Since Jeremy’s being such a jerk, why not make him wait two years for that divorce?”
