Chapter 47
There was an emply seat between Joanna and Jeremy when they sat at the round dining table. Meanwhile, Wendy made a point to sit next to him, so she could put food on his plate for the entire dinner.
“You’ve grown much skinnier lately. Here, have more food,” Wendy said, sounding, upse as she gave him a piece of meat/
She was also well aware of the fact that she had completely ignored Jeremy in the past. After all, she had been focusing her attention solely on Joseph, and she knew it was wrong for her to do that.
Wendy fully intended to make up for it, but Jeremy was rather indifferent to her efforts.
In the past, his expression would darken whenever she put food on his plate or expressed her concern for him. Today, however, he didn’t give her a dirty look. Instead, he was willing to eat everything she gave him.
Wendy was overjoyed, and she had never stopped smiling
“Here, have some food too, Joanna,” Sean said lovingly when he noticed that Joanna was ignored.
In fact, he was quite satisfied with Joanna being his daughter–in–law. He was against the idea of Jeremy and her getting a divorce.
Still, Jeremy was a grown man now. So, Sean had no intention of intervening too much in his son’s private life. What mattered was that Joanna and Jeremy were happy with the
decision.
Joanna had kept her head lowered during dinner. When she heard what Sean said, she raised her head to look at him. However, she unexpectedly met Jeremy’s gaze.
Jeremy looked gloomy, and he was staring at her with an inexplicable emotion. Joanna had no interest in guessing the reason behind his gaze. At the next moment, she turned her gaze to Sean and said, “Okay. Thanks, Sean.”
Joanna didn’t particularly have a big appetite, so she took her time and didn’t put down her utensils until everyone was almost done with their meals.
Afterward, she wanted to help with the cleanup or prepare some fruit for everyone. However, Wendy stopped her with a smile on her face. “You’re pregnant now. Leave these things to the household staff and get some rest.”
“Okay,” Joanna replied.
It just so happened that Sydney was calling her right then. She excused herself and headed to the garden with her phone.
Chapter 47
Sydney had been making preparations for her new movie and searching for funding everywhere she could. That was why she didn’t have time to keep Joanna company. She wouldn’t have known about what happened unless Elliot filled her in through a phone call. Joanna had already asked Elliot to invest in Sydney’s new movie, but Sydney wouldn’t have it. She said she wanted to do it on her own. The truth was that she only meant half of what she said.
Sydney was worried that her new movie would tank. If that happened, Joanna and Elliot would’ve lost a great deal of money, and that might affect their friendship.
After all, there were always unforeseeable changes and risks in the market. Sydney didn’t have the confidence to guarantee that her new movie would be profitable.
“How about you stay at my place, Jo? It beats having to suffer at the Hansens‘ hands.” Sydney said.
“It’s fine. Wendy dotes on the babies I’m carrying. Not only did she provide me with delicious food and wonderful lodging, but she also wouldn’t let me do anything in the house.” Joanna said.
“What about Jeremy? Didn’t he deny that your babies are his?” Sydney was still worried.
“It doesn’t matter what he thinks. I won’t let him affect me anymore.”
At that moment, Joanna felt someone bore a hole in her back with his or her eyes. The gaze was so cold that it made the hair on the nape of her neck stand. She had no idea when, but Jeremy was actually standing ten feet away from her.
Jeremy stood tall and upright underneath the yellowish light, exuding an icy air. The warm glow from the light did nothing to drive away the coldness in his eyes.
“I need to go now, Sydney. I’ll call you again.” Joanna immediately hung up afterward.
