Chapter 6
David remained silent for a long time. before he spoke, “I think you are right. You are getting thinner day by day by overworking. You should just relax and take care of our home now.”
After throwing out these words, without a single consideration of my career, he signed my resignation letter. He then pushed the letter towards me. I picked it up and said, “Thanks David. Let’s part our ways then.”
David’s eyes darkened. He opened his mouth to say something, probably asking. the meaning behind my last sentence. But then closed it, assuming I was only talking. about our professional life. I didn’t explain my words either.
As I walked out of his cabin, I overheard his call. He dialed a number and said, “I want to promote Cinthia. She will now take Rosaline’s position. Immediately arrange

a promotion party. I want to surprise her.”
I only smiled ironically, listening to him being so excited for his secretary‘ s promotion. Why wouldn’t he? Now that I was leaving office, wouldn’t he be able to continue the affair with Cinthia without the fear of being caught?
I went back home and packed my stuff. They easily fit into small luggage. While packing I realised how less the items in the house belonged to me. I had lived eight years with him in this home but I didn’t have a single present from him that could remind me of our happy days together. Now that I thought about it, I realised it was actually better. Having no memory of the past was better than being sad while. remembering the old days. After packing my luggage, I called David. I thought I should at least let him know before leaving. But, he didn’t pick my call like always. I was just going to pick up when the call was received. Cinthia‘ s voice sounded from the other end as she replied seductively,

“Miss Rosaline! David is not in the
condition of picking up your call. He… drank too much at my promotion party and slept on my bed.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of him. He will be fine with me here.” She added, the voice of their desperate kiss echoed through the call, filling me with disgust and nostalgia. I clenched the phone in my hand, trying to resist my anger as I replied in a very calm and composed voice, “I‘ m then leaving him in your care. Please take care of him from now on.”
After throwing out these words, I hang up. I checked my flight. It was two hours late. David’s home was haunting me. I didn’t want to stay there, not for a second. The Client’s visiting card happened to fall from my pocket and I found my next destination. I noticed the strangeness of the visiting card only now. It didn’t mention the name of the company or its owner. It only had the address written on it. I didn’t think

My instincts screamed caution, but
curiosity got the better of me. I made my way to the luxurious hotel room along with the men in black who led me there. I kept myself alert of any sign of trouble.
My gaze immediately fell on a man in a navy blue suit. He was the client David wanted to impress a week ago. But he was standing beside a man like a humble

didn’t need someone‘ s introduction as I knew him better than anyone else. He was Marcus Smith, president of the Smith group. David had been trying his best to compete with him in the business world, but hadn’t succeeded yet. His eyes were icy as he stood up and greeted me.
“Rosaline,” he said, his voice low and smooth. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
“What do you want?” I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.
Marcus smiled, revealing a hint of amusement as he replied, “Nothing… I just want to apologise to you.”
I narrowed my eyes as I asked before shooting a glance at the man who tried to kidnap me, “Apologize for what?”
“I wanted to meet you but my men…” he paused as he shot a cold glance over the man I was staring at and then added,
“They misunderstood me.”
He then turned to me and smiled.

“What offer?”
“I want you to be my partner.” He replied, looking deeply into my eyes.
