I couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle.
Before I could even open my mouth to mock him, his phone rang. The caller ID flashed
Larkin.
“Brother Trent, hurry to the hospital! Lizzie was forced to jump off a building by Heather!”
Trent froze, his hand trembling as he nearly dropped the phone.
“What did you say?”
On the way to the hospital, he nervously tried to reassure me, “Don’t worry. With your husband here, I’ll take care of everything.”
But my heart remained unmoved.
I hadn’t done a thing to Lizzie, so why should I fear her?
I couldn’t help but wonder what new drama she was weaving this time.
As expected, when we arrived, Lizzie’s “tragic” situation was far less dramatic than Larkin had painted it.
She had jumped from the second floor only to land on the awning of the first. Now, with a
sprained ankle, she sat in the hospital bed, whining softly about the pain.
Trent scowled at Larkin, his voice sharp with frustration. “Why didn’t you make things clear?
You had me thinking something catastrophic had happened!”
Larkin snapped back, his anger flaring. “And this isn’t serious? Lizzie was lucky the awning
broke her fall this time. What happens next time?”
His gaze shifted to me, full of accusation. “Heather, you need to take responsibility for this!”
Trent stepped in quickly, pulling Larkin away. “Enough. Why are you yelling at Heather? She — just had a miscarriage!”
Larkin froze, his surprise evident as Trent defended me.
But the shock quickly faded, replaced by a sharp anger. “Brother Trent, you don’t understand how badly Lizzie has been hurt because of her! Lizzie received a message from a friend saying the neighbors were gossiping that she was throwing herself at a married man. She’s too
sensitive to handle the slander and decided to jump!”
Just then, Lizzie conveniently reddened her eyes, her voice trembling with false sincerity. “Actually… it wasn’t just because of that.”
“President, there’s something I’ve been holding back,” she continued, her words dripping
with deceit. “That day by the river, it wasn’t an accident that I fell in. Heather pushed me.”
Her eyes flickered with mock sorrow as she looked at Trent. “I never realized how badly. Heather misunderstood me. That’s why I thought the only way to prove my innocence was to die…”
She gave a pitiful glance toward Trent as if hoping he would unleash his anger on me.

Trent stayed silent for what felt like an eternity, his eyes unreadable as Lizzie waited, her hope growing with each passing second. But he didn’t react as she had expected. Instead, he pinched the bridge of his nose, the weariness clear in his voice.
it.”
“Lizzie, I apologize to you on Heather’s behalf. Whatever compensation you want, just say
Lizzie blinked, stunned by his response. After a moment, she forced a smile, her voice thick with false graciousness. “Since President Curran has said it like that, I suppose we’ll just drop
the matter. I’m sure Heather didn’t do it on purpose.”
Trent let out a quiet sigh of relief, his gaze softening as he looked at her.
But I wasn’t about to let this go so easily.
I scoffed, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “Why should we just let it go?”
“You claim I slandered you to the neighbors, but the chat logs show that I was recovering in the hospital after surgery. Lizzie, who’s the one spreading lies here?”
Trent froze, his mind quickly connecting the dots.
Before he could question Lizzie, the door to the ward swung open with a creak, and several
police officers filed in, their uniforms crisp and imposing.
“Who called the police?”
The room fell silent, everyone stunned by the sudden turn of events.
With a calm that surprised even me, I stepped forward and pulled a small recording pen from my pocket.
“I did,” I said, my voice steady. “Two days ago, by the river, someone pulled me into the water, and I nearly drowned. This recording contains evidence of Lizzie’s intentional harm.”
Lizzie’s face was drained of color, and her eyes were wide with shock.
She never saw it coming.
It was a lucky coincidence that I had the recorder.
Before the miscarriage, I had bought it to record messages for my baby, but that day, wher Trent dragged me to chase after Lizzie, the recorder had accidentally turned on. It had captored her voice, her words, the very moment she pushed me into the river.
