Lily’s Pov
The plane landed with a jolt and I let out a breath I’d been holding since I stepped foot into the airport. The scenery around me changed as I stepped out of the plane and I felt a nervous flutter in my stomach.
I was worried. It’s been three years since I defied my parents and my late grandmother’s wishes and ran off to Chicago to get married to Andrew who I thought was the love of my life.
When my parents and my brother tried to persuade me I blocked them all and cut communications with them. But at the hospital, I reached out to my brother and he arranged for my return. I knew my parents would always love me but I felt terrible after what I did to them.
As I made my way to the arrival hall my phone kept buzzing in my bag and I was forced to bring it out I saw several messages from Andrew asking me where I was and why my number wasn’t connecting
I scoffed, the irony of life. Three weeks ago I was waiting patiently for even a single text message from him but he didn’t text and now I couldn’t give a fuck.
As my fingers hovered over the block button his call came in. I wanted to refuse to answer the call, but my slipped and I accidentally clicked answer
“What do you want?” I asked coldly.
There was a slight pause before Andrew spoke, “Lily? It’s me, Andrew.”
I scoffed, “I know who you are I just don’t know why you’re calling my phone”
He seemed shocked with the way I was talking to him but he still spoke up. “Lily, why are you sounding so cold? And why did you send me divorce papers demanding I sign them? Also, why is there dried blood in the guestroom and where the hell are you?”
“Sign the divorce papers, Andrew, and don’t ever contact me again,” I snapped.
“Lily, I don’t understand. Is this because of Kira? You know you hurt Kira and I’m willing to forgive you if you’ll just tell me where you are. You can come back home now and have the bedroom I got a place for Kira so there wouldn’t be any trouble,” Andrew rambled on into the phone.
I scoffed, there had been a time when I thought I couldn’t live without him A time I hadn’t even dared imagine what my life would be without him in it. A time when hearing these words would have made my heart swell with love but that person died in that hospital
Now I wasn’t Lily Reeds again, I was Lily Wellington and I wasn’t about to entertain Andrew’s nonsense again. “Lily, are you there?” Andrew called over the phone.
“Andrew,” I called him sweetly, “If you ever call my number again, you will regret ever knowing me.”
With that, I smiled and hung up before blocking his number. I grabbed my bag and smiled as I headed out to where I was sure my family was waiting for me.
“Lily Wellington, welcome to Miami,” I said to myself, grinning.
It felt good to shun Andrew and be done with him and be back home. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
“Sister!” a shrill voice sounded behind me.
I whirled around to see my younger brother of twenty years running toward me. He hugged me tightly and I groaned before he released me.
“Damn, Adam! You’re all grown,” I exclaimed
He shrugged, “I could say the same to you”
I frowned when I saw his hair, “What happened to your hair? It’s hall gone.”
Adam shrugged, “Cancer.”
My heart skipped as I stared at him, “Oh my gosh, Adam Since when?”
Adam shrugged, “It’s no big deal, you’ve been gone a long while.”
“No big deal? I sputtered, “Adam, you have cancer”
“Stop formenting your sister, Adam,” my mom’s scolding voice came from behind us.
I turned to see her and my father walking toward me, a smile on their face. They still looked young and beautiful.
“Way to ruin my fun, mother!” Adam groaned.
I frowned and glared at him, “So you don’t have cancer?”
My father chuckled, “God, no! He tried to barb his hair himself and that happened
I burst into laughter as I lightly punched Adam’s arms, “You’re an asshole, Adam.”
Adam chuckled, “Welcome back, sis“.
My parents enveloped me in a tight hug and even though it was crushing me and the pain from the surgery still
hurt I let them hold me as I burst into tears.
I’m so sorry,” I cried.
“Oh baby, it’s alright, you’re home now,” my mom whispered
G
My brother joined the hug and we stood by the airport sidewalk as they cuddled me while I cried like a baby. The familiar scent and warmness of my parents and the teasing expression of my brother made me realize what I’d been
missing
For three years I slaved for Andrew but now I’m finally home and heaven it felt so good. When I finally pulled away and wiped my tears my father had a dark expression on his face.
“Just say the word baby girl and I’ll have that bastard dealt with,” my father said.
