“Enough, Corey. Do you even believe the things you’re saying? I’m not a child anymore. Every single second I
spend with you makes me feel utterly disgusted! After leaving you, I can’t close my eyes without seeing my mother
on her deathbed.”
Corey’s face grew pale as I spoke. His hand, which had been raised as if to reach out, finally fell limp to his side.
“I’m… I’m sorry.”
I laughed, but tears streamed down my face. “Sorry? What good is your ‘sorry‘? Can it bring my mother back
to life? Can it send Jennie to prison? Don’t come looking for me again. Seeing you only makes me hate my own
stupidity even more!”
I then turned and walked away without ever turning around and Corey never showed up again.
Three days later, a piece of domestic news caught my attention. Corey had turned himself into the police. He
stated that the letter of understanding had been obtained through fraudulent means and that he had written it
without my knowledge.
Because it was deemed legally invalid, the car accident case from three years ago was reopened. Without the
letter of understanding, Jennie was destined to face the full force of the law. Later, Sebastian’s company released a statement overnight, clarifying that he and Jennie were no longer married.
That became the final straw that broke Jennie. At the same time, Corey filed a lawsuit, demanding the return of all
the money he had transferred to Jennie over the past three years.
The two of them fought fiercely in court, tearing away any pretense of civility. The trial was live–streamed and quickly became a trending topic. Out of curiosity, I opened the stream and saw hundreds of thousands of viewers. Almost all of them were cursing Jennie for her viciousness.
She had no money to pay him back and was ultimately sentenced to twenty years in prison. Corey’s company suffered a massive hit to its reputation. It managed to hold on for a month before shutting down entirely. And just like that, the childhood friend who had been part of my life for 20 years vanished without a trace.
On the day Jennie was sent to prison, I started a new job. It was an ending but also a new beginning.
