Chapter 17
Upon hearing Julia’s words, Dylan shook his head frantically.
“No, no, that’s not it, Jules. I know it was my fault back then. I failed to protect you–that’s why you left in disappointment. I know I was wrong, Can’t you give me a second chance?
“We loved each other so deeply… How could you just leave like that without even giving me a chance to make things right?”
Miles, who had been standing idly by the side, couldn’t help but chuckle at this.
The sound of his chuckle made Dylan instinctively look around. The intimate scene he had just witnessed between Julia and Miles flashed vividly through his mind.
Dylan clenched his teeth, barely holding himself back from landing a punch on Miles‘ smug, face, But instead of reacting, he looked past him. His gaze focused on Julia, his eyes filled with pleading.
“Jules-”
But just as he began to speak, she cut him off coldly.
“Mr. Schneider, if the reason you stopped me was for this meaningless conversation, then there’s no need to waste our time any further.”
She lowered her gaze once more. As she stopped looking at him, her emotions returned to their usual calm, as if the outburst just moments ago had never happened. It was as though everything was only a figment of Dylan’s imagination.
After saying her piece, she turned to leave without hesitation.
Miles followed her for a few steps, then seemed to remember something suddenly. He stopped, turned to look at Dylan, who was in a defeated daze, and scoffed.
“Five years ago, you let others hurt her like that. And now, you think a simple ‘sorry‘ is enough to make up for all that pain? Mr. Schneider, you sure are shameless.”
Dylan’s pupils contracted slightly. After a long pause, he suddenly looked up, his eyes shining with determination.
Yes, what Miles said made sense.
How could an apology be so superficial? He needed to show real sincerity–to prove to Julia that he truly understood his mistakes.
And the first step, the most important step, was to seek justice for her–the justice she was denied back then.
Kaitlyn never expected Dylan to come looking for her.
When the housekeeper informed her that Dylan had arrived and wanted to see her, she was overwhelmed with joy to the point of losing all rationality. In her excitement, she even forgot that he had just slapped her publicly at the airport not too long ago. Why would he come looking for her all of a sudden?
She stood in front of her vanity mirror, carefully checking her hair and makeup. When she rushed to the top of the staircase, she suddenly stopped and tilted her chin slightly toward the housekeeper behind her.
“Do I look good like this?” she asked.
The housekeeper quickly nodded and smiled supportively. “You look beautiful, miss. I’m sure you’ll win over Mr. Schneider’s heart dressed up like this!”
Those words made Kaitlyn beam with happiness. She lifted her skirt slightly and hurried toward Dylan in small, delicate steps. But when she saw the man sitting on the couch, she came to a halt out of shyness.
“Dylan, did you come to see me?”
Dylan turned to look at her. He suddenly spaced out the moment he saw her in that light green dress
That day, Julia had worn a light green dress too…
His brow furrowed slightly, and he quickly looked away. In an instant, he had returned to his usual indifference, the cold demeanor he always showed around Kaitlyn.
His reaction made Kaitlyn’s heart tighten with anxiety.
Did he not like her outfit? But she had checked it beforehand–there was nothing wrong. Even the housekeeper said it looked good on her. And hadn’t he just spaced out when he saw her? So why the frown?
Before she could figure it out Dylan spoke first. “Go get changed, then come with me.”
Kaitlyn had no reason to refuse.
She quickly changed her clothes, afraid that even a moment’s delay might make him leave without her.
She thought back on the five years she had spent pursuing him without yielding any results and couldn’t help but feel a surge of joy in her heart.
After all these years, Dylan was finally inviting her out again of his own accord. Could this be a sign that things were starting to change? Could it mean that he might reciprocate her feelings soon?
