Outspoken as ever, Mariah snickered. “Calum has played enough mind games over the years. I’d like to see if he really has the guts to marry that cripple. Just don’t come crying to us when he regrets it and begs the three of us to take him back.“%
Her words gave Sherina a bit of reassurance.%
That was right–Calum had chased after her for so many years, hopelessly devoted. Just because she missed one birthday party, there was no way he would suddenly turn around and marry an infertile, paralyzed woman.
Warren’s eyes had been fixed on Sherina the entire time. Seeing her remain silent, a flash of jealousy crossed his face.%
Biting his lip, he spoke sadly. “It’s me, isn’t it? I’m the reason the young master got upset. Even if he beats me half to death, I shouldn’t have barged into his birthday party and ruined everything “%
“What if he talks to Mr. Gray and cuts off your living expenses? I don’t want to drag you all down…“%
His words made all three women’s faces darken.%
If there was one thing they hated more than anything, it was being reminded they were living under someone else’s roof.
Mariah’s face remained icy. “I’ve got two hands and two feet. Even if they cut me off, I’ll survive.“%
Sherina gently patted Warren’s hand to comfort him.%
“Don’t worry. Calum can’t possibly manage the Gray empire alone. He can’t even produce an heir by himself. Sooner or later, he’ll come crawling back and beg the three of us to return and help run the company “%
“And don’t talk about burdening us. Calum is the one who messed everything up. If he hadn’t plotted against you, we wouldn’t have left and humiliated him today.”
They truly believed all they did was hurt Calum’s pride a little–never once considering the ripple effects they had triggered. Eventually, Sherina grew uneasy. She pulled out her phone and sent Calum a message.
[You went too far today. There’s no need to throw a tantrum and marry a cripple who can’t have children. If you apologize to Warren, I’m willing to marry you.]
In her mind, she imagined him lighting up with joy the moment he saw her message.
But her expression froze the second she saw the red exclamation mark beside it, prompting her message couldn’t be sent.
Not only had Calum deleted her as a contact–he blocked her!%
Later that night, during the second half of the banquet, dozens of helicopters arrived, showering the sky with millions worth of imported pink roses.
Amid the sea of petals, Meredith–cold and elegant–was slowly wheeled out of a helicopter.
She made her way down the red carpet toward me, her eyes filled with warmth.”
My father stared, utterly stunned.”
“What is she doing here?!”
The other guests were equally confused.
They still saw Meredith as nothing more than a paralyzed, infertile woman.
But they had all conveniently forgotten who she really was.
She was the sole heir to the Hoffman family–the most prestigious old–money family in the capital.
She was the real heiress–the princess of the elite social circle.
Had it not been for the Hoffman family’s insistence on a “marriage of equals,” she might’ve been married off a dozen times by now. After all, the Hoffman family represented centuries of legacy and power–true old money.
The Gray family, on the other hand, had only risen in the past few decades. Though wealthy, it lacked that deep–rooted heritage. To everyone, I was just a decorative figure in this engagement.
No one believed the Hoffman family would actually value this marriage.
As the murmurs rippled through the crowd, Meredith smiled and said, “How can a fiancée miss her own engagement party?” “I’m not late, am I?”
She personally presented me a bouquet of air–shipped Bulgarian roses, and held them out.
Waiting for me to take them.
I didn’t let her wait long. Smiling, I took the bouquet. “You arrived just in time.”
The frost that had always clung to her brows melted instantly. For the first time, she gave the crowd a rare glimpse of warmth.&
That single gesture, showing kindness to everyone for my sake, left the crowd in stunned silence.
Before her accident, Meredith had already been known as the coldest beauty in the capital. Afterward, she’d become utterly unapproachable, so detached that she had even driven her own father out of the house.
