Chapter 7%
Just as I took Meredith’s right hand, Sherina appeared at the entrance, her face was gloomy and unreadable %
Her sudden return made many in the crowd frown.
“Did Sherina regret walking out?”
“She must’ve acted on impulse earlier. Now that she’s calmed down, she’s come back to fix things”
“She and Calum grew up together. If she lowers her head a little, he’ll definitely call off the engagement with the Hoffman family“%
Before I could respond, Meredith’s grip on my hand tightened–just slightly, but unmistakably
Her expression remained composed, but I could sense the storm behind her calm eyes.
The moment Sherina met her gaze, she instinctively sensed danger
Still, she forced herself to speak, her voice was gentle, “I’m sorry. Calum has always been a little impulsive. If he said anything earlier that caused a misunderstanding, I hope you won’t take it to heart.”
She extended a hand toward me, signaling with her eyes–Don’t make this a scene.
But Meredith’s expression turned icy as she asked flatly, “And you are?”
Everyone knew she was deliberately snubbing Sherina
Over the years, Sherina had often attended events on behalf of the Gray family.%
As someone well–versed in the business world, Meredith obviously recognized her
But this wasn’t about not knowing her–it was about putting her in her place. Sherina opened her mouth, ready to say she was my fiancée.
But her eyes fell on the hands I was still holding–mine and Meredith’s–and she froze It seemed she finally remembered.
To this day, she was nothing more than the Gray family’s adopted daughter, nothing more.
Meredith smirked, her voice cool and mocking. “If you’re speaking to me as the Gray family’s foster daughter, I’m afraid you’re not qualified.“N
Sherina’s expression twisted with embarrassment, but her eyes remained fixed on me, stubborn and desperate. “Calum, are you really going to throw away your future over a fit of anger?”
Her fists clenched tightly, fingers pale from the pressure.
After all these years, of course I could tell when she was panicking
But what exactly was she afraid of?
Was it that I was marrying Meredith?
Or that the Gray family fortune might never be hers?
I looked at her and smiled faintly. “Meredith and I love each other. There’s no anger involved. And the engagement was finalized long ago. What are you trying to do–crash the wedding?“W
I deliberately used the words ‘crash the wedding, and as expected, Sherina immediately snapped.
“I would never crash a wedding! I…”
Her face darkened. She gritted her teeth and hissed. “I just don’t want to see you make a joke out of the Hoffman family. If you regret this in the future, it’ll drag down the entire Gray household!”
I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “No need for you to worry about it. After all, your surname is Gregory”
When my father adopted the three of them, Sherina insisted on keeping her birth surname.!!
She had said she wanted to honor her parents.
My father hadn’t forced her. He didn’t care enough to.
At last, Sherina looked at me with true clarity.
The tenderness that once filled my eyes had vanished. Now they were distant, frosted over, as if I couldn’t wait to cast her out then and there.
Feeling my decisive stance, Meredith’s heart quietly warmed. Her fingers tightened around mine again–perhaps afraid of losing me after all.
Sherina clenched her fist and gulped. After a long moment, she asked again, hesitantly. “Are you really going to marry Meredith?” Before I could respond, a voice–deep and full of authority–cut through the air.
“Sherina, who gave you the right to pester Calum?”
Dad strode forward. His eyes fixed sternly on her as he came to stand beside me.”
Sherina’s shoulders slumped under his gaze. She didn’t dare speak again.#
“I’m sorry…”
In front of my father, she always felt small.
Because she was the one who had been adopted–the one who had been given everything. Nooked at Sherina’s downcast expression but, for once, I didn’t try to comfort her.!!
