Chapter 178
“Sylvie, you’d better get as far away from me as possible before I lose my temper. Don’t let me see your face again. Tomorrow, you’re coming with me to City Hall to sign the divorce papers.“&
Sylvie stared at him, stunned, as tears rolled down her cheeks in heavy drops.
“Brother! What did I do wrong? Is it a crime to love you?!”
Brynn stood still, eyes locked on her wearing my nightgown, and uttered word by word, “Do you love me, or do you love my money?“>
Sylvie fell silent in an instant.
Brynn turned away, his voice cold as steel as he barked at the guards outside the door, “Come in. Strip the clothes off her.”
Sylvie’s head snapped up, her face draining of color.
“Brother?” she whispered, trembling as if she couldn’t believe what she’d heard.
Brynn’s eyes were glacial. “You’re not worthy of wearing her things. Not even a thread.”
The two bodyguards stepped inside.
Panic gripped her. Sylvie shrank back on her knees, clutching her collar in terror, sobbing uncontrollably.
“No. Brother, I was wrong! I just, I only wanted…”
She broke down completely, her tears and snot mixing as she crumbled, utterly disheveled.
But Brynn didn’t even look at her.”
“Leave her underwear. Strip the rest.”
His tone was devoid of feeling. “Then throw her out. Don’t let her stain this place.“}
“Brother!” Sylvie wailed, lunging at him in hysteria. “How could you treat me like this?!”
But Brynn didn’t stop, didn’t turn. He walked back into the room without so much as a backward glance.§
The next second, Sylvie was seized and yanked to her feet. She clung to herself, screaming and flailing like a drowning soul clinging to the last thread of dignity.
But in the end, the silk nightgown was still ripped from her; even her shoes were left behind, and she was hurled out through the grand gates of the Murphy Residence.
The heavy door slammed shut with a deafening bang, sealing her off completely in the bitter night wind.
Sylvie curled up outside, hugging herself tight as she trembled in fear.
She sat slumped on the cold ground, fingernails digging into her palms, nearly breaking the skin.
Solomon walked over quietly, hugging a teddy bear to his chest.
He blinked at his mother, still shaking as she cried, and softly said, “Mommy, when I was at kindergarten, I saw that auntie with another man.”
Sylvie’s eyes lit up. She quickly asked Solomon where he had seen it.”
If I was with another man, wouldn’t that make me “dirty” too?!
Would Brynn stop liking me then?
She stili couldn’t let go of Brynn, even now.
And Brynn hadn’t stopped looking for me either. He spent a fortune on private investigators, determined to track down where I had gone. At that moment, I was lounging on the sofa in the new marital home Hayden had just bought. My body was curled lazily against the cushions when my phone screen lit up. My fingers paused mid–air.
It was a message from my assistant, he said Brynn was searching for me everywhere.”
I didn’t open it. I just sat there quietly for a while.
“He’s looking for you again?“%
Hayden’s low voice came from behind.”
On instinct, I flipped the phone face–down and set it on the coffee table. My voice was calm. “It’s not him. I already blocked him.”
I didn’t know why, but every time Brynn’s name came up in front of Hayden, a wave of guilt would rise in my chest.)
“Hmm?”
Hayden dragged out the syllable, then came over and sat beside me. He casually pulled me into his arms, one arm resting behind me on the sofa, the other toying with my fingers in silence.
His fingers were long and slender, every knuckle clearly defined. At that moment, he was gently circling my fingertips like a cat playing with something it loved.
He didn’t say much, but that quiet, unhurried touch made my heart slowly begin to warm.”
