Chapter 8X
But why didn’t she consider that she had a child with Van? Even if she cut ties with him and abandoned the child at an orphanage, could she really erase that memory?!
Of course not.
And even if she could, where would that leave me?”
Even now, she acts without thinking about how I feel.
To keep her from pulling another stunt, I said coldly, “Pam, we’re over. Even if you were standing in front of me naked, I wouldn’t feel a thing.”
“I know, I know… I wronged you. I deserve everything I have now. I brought this on myself.“}
Pam murmured, her eyes red, tears spilling freely.
I sighed and said flatly, “Go back and get some rest.“}}
She looked at me one last time, then turned away, staggering as she walked, almost falling more than once.§
I stood at the doorway, watching her until she disappeared into the dormitory.
The next morning, Pam showed up in a new outfit, with makeup that was perfectly done, with a smile as bright as spring.
“David, let’s go!“}]
I was momentarily taken aback. For a second, it felt like she thought we were going on a trip, not finalizing a divorce. But then I smiled faintly.
Maybe that was for the best.
On the way, Pam kept stealing glances at me, as if debating whether to speak.
I said, “If you have something to say, just say it.“D
She hesitated, then whispered, “David, after we divorce, can we go back to being friends like before?“}
I gave no reply.
But she seemed to understand anyway. Her eyes dimmed.”
After we left the Civil Affairs Bureau, I stared at the divorce certificate in my hand, my mind blank.
From marriage to divorce–it felt like we’d finally reached the end of the road.
Pam clutched her own certificate tightly, eyes red.
“Let’s go.”
Just as I turned to leave, I spotted someone sprinting toward us.”
It was Van, his face lit up with excitement.
I turned coldly to Pam. “You told him to come?”
Did you divorce me just to marry Van?!
So all that regret and longing was just another act.§
But strangely, I no longer felt angry or hurt.”
We are divorced now. Whatever happened between them was no longer my concern.
Pam panicked. “No! I didn’t call him.”}
Seeing my disbelief, she turned to Van. “Why are you here?”
Van smiled. “Pam, I’ve been waiting outside the Civil Affairs Bureau these past few days. I knew you and David would end it.”
He reached for her hand. “Even if you’re no longer with David, I’m still here. I love you just as much as he did–maybe even more.“}] “Pam, let’s get married. Then we’ll bring our child home from the orphanage. The three of us can finally be a family.”
Looking at the emotion in his eyes, I couldn’t help but sneeze.
So eager. So dramatic.}
But forever??
I raised an eyebrow.
“Enough!” Pam shook off his hand, voice sharp. “I never said I’d marry you. I told you clearly a year ago–I don’t love you anymore!” Van’s smile froze. “Pam, stop lying. We have a child together. How can you not love me?”
“That’s only because you said you were dying! Do you know how much I pitied you?“!
Pam shouted, furious.
I said calmly, “He’s dying? He looks pretty healthy to me.”>
Pam spun around, stunned, her eyes wide with disbelief.”
She pointed at Van with a trembling finger. “You… you lied to me!“}
Van finally dropped the act. “Yes, I lied. But it was because I love you. I wanted you to stay by my side.“!
