I was holding only a basket of strawberries, meant for Winston and Adeline.
But due to some delays on the way, I ended up bringing them home instead.
To my surprise, I ran into Fletcher.
And of course, I had to endure a few sarcastic remarks from him.
Clearly, Fletcher had mistaken the basket I was giving to Miles for the one meant for Winston.
I didn’t feel like arguing.
Offending an investor wasn’t a smart move, especially since I was hoping for more of his

investment.
“I’ll head upstairs,” I said.
“Ms. Grande, so eager to curry favor?” Fletcher’s voice dripped with sarcasm.
I paused and looked at him in confusion. In an instant, I understood the implication.
He probably thought I was going out of my way to please Winston.
I smiled slightly and replied, “I remember the manor owner mentioning that the strawberries were free. I don’t think it’s necessary to report their whereabouts to Lynton Group, right?”
I kept my voice even, hiding any emotion.

sneering. “Ms. Grande, seems like even the injury on your wrist can’t stop your ambitions.”
I didn’t get angry. Instead, I smiled back. “Mr. Lynton, you flatter me. There’s still so much I need to learn from you.”
It was just an insincere remark, something anyone could say.
But Fletcher didn’t respond, his gaze sharp, as if laced with venom.
I decided to end the conversation. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave…”
“Why did you suddenly drink last night?” Fletcher interrupted, his tone tinged with curiosity. “Drowning your sorrows?”
I was caught off guard.

What a mistake.
In an instant, I decided to embrace my shamelessness, raising my gaze to Fletcher and with a sly smile said, “Mr. Lynton, are you feeling sorry for me?”
Fletcher opened his mouth, about to speak, but his phone in his pocket rang.
I waved my hand wisely, quickly walking to the elevator, making my escape.
I had to let Fletcher see just how terrifying I could be when I threw away all my inhibitions.
The next morning, I brought the strawberries
to the office.

Kaitlyn looked at me in surprise. “Didn’t give them away?”
“It was too late, not convenient,” I said honestly. “I’ll give them today.”
Then I contacted Adeline on WhatsApp.
“Lena, you’re so sweet, strawberries from Horton Manor? You really are thinking of us.”
Adeline asked me to meet her at the bookstore near the street after work.
However, when I arrived at the location, I was surprised to see Winston there as well.
The bookstore was holding a reading session, and he was sitting in the middle of the group. As soon as he saw me, he immediately stood up to greet me.

“Why did you bring them yourself?” Winston asked, his eyes gleaming with surprise as he glanced at the fruit basket. “If you had told me, I would’ve picked you up.”
I felt awkward.
At that moment, Adeline ran over, took the basket from my hands, and said, “Thanks, Lena. They look delicious. I’ll go wash them and try them later.”
Winston glanced at Adeline, a hint of disappointment flashing in his charming eyes. “So, they weren’t specially for me?”
It was an embarrassing misunderstanding, and I had no choice but to awkwardly change the subject. “Winston, do you often attend book clubs like this?”

Winston’s interest piqued immediately. “That reminds me, I have a book for you. Come with me.”
I secretly breathed a sigh of relief and followed Winston up to the second floor.
Soon, he handed me a mystery novel, introducing it with enthusiasm. “The story is amazing, you’ll never guess the ending.”
I actually preferred programming books, but I didn’t want to dampen Winston’s enthusiasm. After glancing at the author’s name, I asked, “Is he really that good?”
Winston wiped his nose and replied, “You’ll see when you read it.”
I decided to be straightforward. “How much was it? I’ll transfer the money to you.”

Winston’s face darkened. “Lena, we don’t need to be so formal, do we?”
He said it so naturally that I almost felt paying for the book was like undermining our friendship.
Kaitlyn had complained about me being stubborn before.
I decided to compromise and smiled. “Alright, I won’t pay for it then.”
“Professor Fleming, Charlene,” a soft, sweet voice suddenly interrupted, “What a coincidence.”
I turned to my side and immediately spotted Fletcher and Davina standing not far away.
Fletcher was holding a few books, standing next to Davina, and quietly looking our way.

His gaze was deep and distant, with a subtle hint of sarcasm at the corners of his mouth.
Davina had come to the bookstore looking for books related to game programming.
As for Fletcher, it was clear he was here to accompany his sweetheart.
The two of them had been browsing the store for a while but hadn’t yet found a game backend development guide from their shopping list, and they were getting anxious.
“Professor Fleming, are you here to choose books with Charlene?” Davina fluttered her big eyes at Winston. “A mystery book, huh?”
Winston scratched his head. “Just a coincidence.”

As soon as he finished speaking, I noticed a gaze from across the room. Looking up, I saw Fletcher’s position.
Our eyes met, and I turned my face away, pretending not to notice. I pointed to the bookshelf and said, “Second row from the top, second book from the left”
Davina was confused. “What?”
“The reference book you were looking for,” I replied.
Davina glanced at the spot I was pointing to, and after a moment, her face lit up with delight. “Charlene, you’re amazing!”
I smiled but didn’t say anything.
This bookstore had been around for seven or eight years near the university town. During

my time in college, Fletcher and I had visited it often, and I’d skimmed through most of the programming books there. How could I not know where things were?
Grateful, Davina took the reference book and said, “Charlene, thank you. In that case, let us treat you and Professor Fleming to a meal.”
Just for pointing out a book’s location, I got treated to a meal. Should I feel lucky?
Winston seemed to sense my thoughts and declined politely. “Ms. Bates, no need for that.”
“How about the school cafeteria?” Davina suggested, as if not understanding what he said. “Let’s go to the place you and Charlene ate at last time, shall we?”
She sure was persistent.

That place was one Fletcher knew even better than we did.
I turned to Fletcher and asked, “Mr. Lynton, what do you think?”
“Letch, just go, okay?” Davina pouted, tugging at Fletcher’s sleeve. “I want to try their food too.”
Fletcher wore a look as though he couldn’t refuse her.
Seeing this, I readily agreed. “Alright, let’s go. there.”
Half an hour later, the four of us arrived at the school cafeteria.
Winston had a good reputation, so it was no surprise that students came over to greet

him. With Fletcher in his sharp suit and looking like a walking BJD, we attracted quite a few curious stares.
Davina seemed unfazed, even a little vain, as she looked over the menu and asked cheerfully, “Fletcher, what are you having?”
“Chicken Marsala.”
“I’ll have the same as you.”
It was funny, but the seat Fletcher chose was the exact same one he had sat in during our university days.
And he ordered the same dish.
But this time, the person sitting beside him wasn’t me.
“Lena, what about you? Are you having

Chicken Marsala too?” Winston’s voice brought me back to reality.
Immediately, my mind flashed back to that dinner at Horton Manor. I shook my head and said, “I’m tired of it. I’ll have something different.”
Winston recommended two dishes, and since I wasn’t picky, I casually said, “I’ll have the same as you.”
Ironically, Fletcher and Davina both ordered Chicken Marsala, while Winston and I chose chili con carne.
It was actually pretty delicious.
