Without another word, he guided Davina toward the lounge, showing no hint of leniency.
Half an hour later, we were all taken to the police station.
The head of the legal department at Lynton Group arrived in a hurry as well.
After giving our statements, the officer kindly said, “The other party’s lawyer claims the coffee was too hot and suggests the possibility of intentional bodily harm.”
My heart skipped a beat. I asked, “So they’re considering pressing charges in a criminal direction?”

The meaning was clear. Right now, Fletcher could easily pursue criminal charges against Danica. With Lynton Group’s financial resources and influence, finding grounds to nitpick would be effortless.
Danica probably hadn’t expected her moment of impulse to lead to this. She looked utterly stunned.
I tried to comfort her, “No matter what, attacking someone else is never right. Danica, you did make a mistake this time.”
“But Charlene, Davina shouldn’t have called my character designs trash,” Danica’s eyes reddened. “You know how much I care about my work. I can’t stand anyone insulting it!”

I was taken aback. The usually soft–spoken Davina said something like that?
“Don’t worry. I’ll talk to Mr. Lynton and Davina.”
Although Danica was in the wrong, she needed to understand the severity of her actions, but she shouldn’t bear criminal responsibility for it. Once something like that became a charge, it could destroy a young person’s future.
When I went to find Fletcher, however, he and Davina had already left the station.
The lawyer informed me, “Ms. Bates was a bit shaken, still upset. Mr. Lynton was worried and took her home first.”

It was then I realized how clear–headed Davina was about the situation.
Seeing I didn’t respond, Davina continued, “Charlene, you don’t need to convince me. The decision to press charges is Letch’s. Sorry, I’m powerless to do anything.”
She hung up the phone, not giving me a chance to continue pleading.
The words Kaitlyn had said earlier suddenly flashed in my mind, and a wave of unease washed over me.
I thought, since negotiating a peaceful settlement wasn’t working, our next step should be to consult a lawyer, just in case things escalated.

Kaitlyn and I both knew several lawyers who specialized in civil cases, but as soon as they heard that the opposing party was Lynton Group’s legal department, they turned and walked away without a second glance.
Kaitlyn stomped her foot in frustration. “Look at them, all of them are just a bunch of cowards!”
I could understand their reluctance–after all, who would want to bring trouble upon themselves for no reason?
Somehow, Winston had caught wind of the situation and, to our surprise, brought along a criminal lawyer to our office.

With that, Kaitlyn and I started piecing things together.
Before sunset, with the staff’s recorded statements in hand, Winston and I arranged to meet with Davina.
When she saw us, Davina’s eyes widened with surprise. “Charlene, is there something you need from me?”
Winston and I exchanged a glance. I handed her the recording, saying, “Davina, here’s a recording from a café employee. You should listen to it.”

Upon hearing it. Davina’s face drained of color. “W–What recording?”
I spoke calmly, “An employee mentioned that before Danica threw coffee on you, the two of you had an argument.”
“D–Did we?” Davina’s fingers curled nervously, her speech faltering. “Charlene, after our call last night, I thought things over carefully. Honestly, this situation isn’t nearly as serious as the lawyer made it sound, don’t you think?”
Winston exchanged another look with me, then asked, “So, what’s your stance on this?”
Davina glanced at me briefly and said, “As for Letch, I’ll try to convince him to drop the lawsuit.”
I breathed a sigh of relief.

Then I heard Davina ask, “So, about this recording…”
However, Davina didn’t know that the recording just contained some inconsequential conversations between us and the café staff. Today’s employees were all savvy and didn’t want to get involved in trouble.
But she had already let something slip.
From this, Winston and I easily deduced that Danica’s claim that Davina had deliberately provoked her might actually have some truth to it.
“Ms. Bates,” Winston took a sip of his coffee and spoke patiently, “We will destroy the recording, and as for the lawsuit, we’ll leave that in your hands.”

Davina looked at me nervously, her voice small. “I… I understand.”
Her fragile demeanor, coupled with the way she was now acting so cautiously, made her seem like a victim of some great injustice.
But thankfully, things seemed to be heading in the right direction.
“Letch, why are you here?”
The question reached my ears, and I followed Davina’s gaze. Sure enough, I saw Fletcher standing just a few steps away, his expression serious as he walked over.
