Chapter 12%
“What!” Magnus shouted, his voice filled with shock.!!
He scrambled out of bed, his hands shaking as he dialed the phone, his voice tense Germany?”
with
urgency.
“Where is
s she
e now? Why did she go to
His assistant hesitated, carefully weighing his words before responding. “Miss Colette… after she arrived in Germany, she transferred to another location. The information can’t be tracked here.“&
“So we don’t know where she is now?”
In an instant, it felt as if all the energy drained from Magnus. If Colette had truly done what Spencer suggested, gone abroad to mislead
him, at least she would have left a trace, some clue to follow. But no, she had specifically gone to Germany, then disappeared without a trace, leaving them in the dark.
Magnus couldn’t understand why, hearing that, his heart felt so hollow!
Her words echoed in his mind once more.
“I have no more ties with the Ferrero family or the Moore family!”
He collapsed weakly onto the bed, his mind spinning.
So, she had meant every word.
Colette had really left. It wasn’t out of anger, nor was it some cruel joke. No matter how unwilling he was to believe it, she had truly done it, left without a second thought, walking away from everything the Ferrero family had to offer.
At that moment, Magnus felt utterly lost.2

He wanted to find her, but with the vastness of the world, it was a hopeless task. If she had stayed within the country, they the Ferrero family’s influence to track her down. But now, she was overseas, and finding her was like searching for a needle in a haystack. Without thinking, Magnus stumbled to the liquor cabinet, grabbed a few bottles, and began drinking, the burn in his throat barely noticeable as he slowly made his way to the room where Colette’s things had been kept.)
But when he reached the room, the memories hit him. Those things had already been nearly destroyed in the heat of his rage.
Colette hadn’t had many belongings to begin with, and now, only a few items remained, too difficult to destroy, too precious to throw away.2
Magnus‘ heart felt as disordered as the room around him.
Then, his eyes caught something; a small amulet in the comer, untouched.
As he picked it up, a sudden clarity washed over him.
This was the amulet he and Colette had gotten together at the church after she’d discovered she was pregnant.
At that moment, he had placed the amulet in Colette’s hand, promising her that he would protect her and their unbom child.
But what had he done after that??
in front of Colette, he had been the one to strangle their child.&
It was he who had callously thrown the baby’s body into the mass grave!
The amulet in his hand suddenly felt unbearably hot, but Magnus couldn’t bring himself to release it. Letting go felt like another betrayal, another abandonment
With a heavy heart, Magnus took the amulet and headed toward the mass grave.5
He reached the spot where he had discarded their dead child, but there was no sign of the baby.
Only then did it hit him: Colette had said she would bury the child properly.
But if the baby couldn’t be laid to rest in the Ferrero family’s ancestral tomb, could it truly be called a proper burial??
Magnus clenched his fists, swearing to convince his father to move the child’s body back. Even if he couldn’t find Colette, at least he’d be able to fulfill one of her final wishes.
Sturnbling through the surrounding cemeteries, he continued his search, drunkenly stumbling from one plot to the next, from dusk until dawn. Yet, he found no trace, no gravestone with the child’s name.”
Just as he was about to give up, his phone rang.
Spencer’s excited voice crackled over the line.
“We’ve located Colette’s phone! She hasn’t left. She’s still in the country!”
