Chapter 72

“Stop! Don’t!” Seeing that Evelyn didn’t defend herself, Lucian grew frantic. He rushed forward, desperate to intervene.

“However aggrieved Ms. Delacroix may seem, her version is still one-sided. We should hear Ms. Sinclair’s account. There may not be cameras in the restroom, but someone else might have been present. Let’s find out the truth.”

At the sight of Lucian, Cassandra froze. Her lips parted slightly, as if her soul had momentarily left her body. Her usual sharp wit and rationality evaporated instantly.

Startled, Evelyn glanced at Lucian. That fleeting look sent a surge of warmth through him.

Their silent exchange didn’t escape Sebastian’s notice. To him, it was undeniable proof of their intimacy.

Yet he remained outwardly composed, his hands tightening into fists.

“There were no witnesses. We were alone in the restroom,” Evelyn stated coolly.

Lucian frowned, frustrated by the lack of evidence to resolve this fairly.

“Who else could it be? My daughter wouldn’t harm herself! Vanessa has always been terrified of pain!” Seraphina shrieked.

Though Vanessa sobbed pitifully in Sebastian’s arms, inwardly, she was gloating.

“So, Evelyn, did you do it?” Sebastian’s voice was icy.

Evelyn’s heart plummeted. Her eyes stung, her nose tingled, but she clenched her fists, swallowing the injustice burning inside her.

Lucian rubbed his temples, exasperated. For a CEO, Sebastian had an appalling way with words.

Seeing Evelyn’s bloodshot eyes, Sebastian felt a sharp pang in his chest. He’d been too harsh.

He knew he was being unfair. But the humiliation from the auction still festered, fueling his coldness toward her.

Taking a deep breath, Evelyn smirked. “Yes, I did it. What will you do? Seek revenge?”

“I sacrificed everything for his family. Yet all it takes is one tear from me, and Sebastian will turn on you. My fake tears mean more than your entire existence!”

Evelyn lifted her chin and strode toward Vanessa. Without hesitation, she slapped her—hard.

The sound echoed through the room. Everyone gasped, faces paling.

She moved so fast Sebastian couldn’t react. All he felt was the rush of air from the impact.

“Ah! How dare you!” Vanessa reeled, stars exploding in her vision, ears ringing.

“You deserved it!” Evelyn’s smile vanished, replaced by trembling fury. “That was for the bracelet Grandfather gave me. Who gave you the right to destroy what’s mine?”

“Evelyn! You’ve gone too far!” Sebastian snarled.

He’d noticed the angry red mark on her wrist when she raised her hand. Her delicate skin made even minor injuries glaring.

But rage blinded him. All he saw was her defiance.

Meanwhile, Cassandra and the Montclair sisters gaped, stunned by Evelyn’s audacity.
