Chapter 73
Zachary was frozen in shock. His heart pounded erratically as he stared at his ex-wife, unable to comprehend what he was seeing.
She had been soft-spoken and gentle when they were married. Now, she stood before him, defiant and ruthless—willing to harm without hesitation.
“Is it true, Evelyn?” Zachary’s voice was strained, his dark eyes boring into hers.
Evelyn arched a brow, her lips curling into a chilling smirk. The sight made Lucian clutch his chest, struck by how someone so wicked could still look breathtakingly beautiful.
“Zachary… What are you implying?” Vanessa, sensing his wavering trust, immediately burst into tears. “Don’t you—don’t you believe me? Am I really so unreliable in your eyes?”
She didn’t understand why Evelyn would admit to the accusation, but it didn’t matter. If it helped her get what she wanted, Evelyn’s stupidity was her own problem.
“Zachary, look at the monster you married!” Seraphina shrieked, seizing the moment. “She nearly slit Vanessa’s throat! She wanted my daughter dead!”
Taking full advantage, Seraphina and Vanessa sobbed dramatically. Zachary’s gaze remained locked on Evelyn, his expression icy.
“Evelyn, when you were part of the Blackwood family, you were never this violent,” Isabella remarked, her tone dripping with false concern. “You were meek. Obedient. Nothing like the woman who would attack someone over a disagreement.”
She glared at Evelyn. “Now that you and Zachary are divorced, you’ve finally shown your true colors. There’s no need to pretend anymore, is there?”
“Thankfully, Zachary came to his senses and rekindled things with Vanessa. Who knows how long we would’ve been fooled by your poisonous act?”
“That’s enough, Mrs. Blackwood!” Lucian snapped, unable to listen any longer. His fists clenched, ready to defend Evelyn, but she stopped him with a firm grip on his arm.
The sight of their closeness made Cassandra’s blood boil. Biting her lip, her hatred for her former sister-in-law deepened.
“Believe whatever you want,” Evelyn said with a mocking laugh.
“Apologize to Vanessa.” Zachary turned away, his voice devoid of warmth. It was as if their three-year marriage had never existed—as if they were nothing more than strangers.
Vanessa couldn’t suppress her triumphant smirk. Look at you, you pathetic fool. You gave him everything—your heart, your devotion—and yet, all it takes is one tear from me, and he turns against you. Your love was worthless compared to my performance.
Evelyn lifted her chin and strode toward Vanessa. Without hesitation, she struck her—hard. The force of the slap echoed through the room, leaving everyone stunned.
She had moved so fast that Zachary didn’t even have time to react. All he felt was the sharp gust of air from the impact.
“Ah! How dare you hit me!” Vanessa shrieked, clutching her cheek. Her vision blurred from the pain, her ears ringing.
“I hit you because you deserved it!” Evelyn’s smile vanished, replaced by raw fury. “That was for the bracelet Grandfather gave me. Who gave you the right to destroy what’s mine?”
“Evelyn! You’ve gone too far!” Zachary snarled.
He had noticed the reddened welt on her wrist when she raised her hand. Her skin was delicate—every injury showed starkly.
But his anger blinded him. All he saw was her defiance.
