Chapter 13 – Drama With A Big

LYNN
The day passed in a blur of new routines. and silent expectations. Ethan had arranged for my clothes to be delivered, and after a long, hot shower, I finally felt like myself again, even if only for a brief moment. I chose a simple yet elegant dress that felt more like me than anything I’d worn recently.
Downstairs, I could smell the faint scent of fresh herbs and something baking. It was warm and inviting, and I was grateful for the comfort it provided, even though the house felt too grand for someone like me.
As I made my way to the kitchen, I found Barbara, Ethan‘ s mother, humming as she prepared something on the counter. She glanced up when she saw me, her lips curling into a smile.

“Good morning, Lynn,” she said with a tone that was smooth but lacked the warmth of familiarity. “I thought you might want to join me in the kitchen for a bit.”
“Of course,” I said, not wanting to be rude. “Thank you for letting me help.”
Barbara waved me over, motioning for me to stand beside her. As I stepped closer, she gave me a once–over, her eyes lingering for a moment before she raised an eyebrow.
“So, how was your night?” she asked, her voice laced with a playful curiosity that I didn’t quite trust. “Was it as… interesting as it looked?”
My cheeks burned, and I could feel myself squirming under her gaze. “It was fine,” I mumbled, trying to sound casual. “Just… adjusting.”
Barbara chuckled softly. “Adjusting, yes. I suppose you’ll have to get used to a few things around here, won‘ t you?”

I didn’t know how to respond, so I simply nodded, focusing on the task at hand. We continued preparing the meal in silence, but Barbara’s occasional sideways glances. and faint smile made me feel like she was testing me. I wasn’t sure if I was passing or failing, but I was trying to keep my
composure.
After a while, we finished in the kitchen, and I decided to step outside for some fresh air. The weather was warm, with a light breeze that stirred the leaves of the trees in the expansive garden. It was peaceful, serene–almost the opposite of everything that had been going on in the past few days.
I took a deep breath, letting the quiet settle over me as I walked along the stone path, admiring the flowers and the manicured. bushes. It was a nice escape from the
constant tension that surrounded me
inside the house.
But as I turned a corner near the rose

bushes, I froze.
Nora was standing there, her arms crossed over her chest, an expression of pure disdain on her face. When she saw me, she straightened up and took a few steps forward, her heels clicking sharply on the
stone.
“So, you’re here,” Nora sneered, her voice dripping with venom. “Worming your way into the same family I’m trying to marry into. You‘ ve got some nerve.”
I blinked, trying to keep my cool. “I’m not trying to take anything from you, Nora. I’m just here for a… temporary arrangement.”
“Don’t act like you don’t want this,” she hissed, stepping even closer. “You think you can just waltz in here and take what‘ s mine?”
I shook my head, trying to keep my voice steady. “You already have Javier, don’t you? What more do you want from me?”

Nora’s eyes narrowed, and I could see the rage building up inside her. She wasn’t done yet.
“I want you out of my life, Lynn,” she spat. “I want you gone. You‘ re not welcome here.”
I crossed my arms, unimpressed. “You don’t get to tell me where I can and can’t be. But if you really want me to leave, that’s your problem to figure out.”
Before I could walk away, Nora suddenly stumbled, dramatically collapsing to the ground with a loud gasp. Her hand shot out as she flailed, and I saw the flash of pain cross her face when her palm landed on one of the rose thorns.
She screamed, clutching her hand to her chest as she sat on the ground, her tears flowing freely. “Oh my God, it hurts!” she wailed, dramatically twisting her body in a fake display of agony.
I stared at her, incredulous. “Really,

Nora?” I couldn‘ t hide the disbelief in
my voice. “You‘ re going to cry over a tiny cut?”
Her sobs were barely coherent, but I wasn’t buying it for a second. “You can stop acting now,” I said, my voice flat.
“Get up and stop trying to get sympathy.”
Nora sniffled, still clutching her hand but no longer crying as theatrically. She shot me an accusing glare, but before she could respond, I heard the sound of footsteps approaching.
I turned, and to my surprise, it was Barbara and Theodore, both of them looking stern.
“Lynn, what’s going on here?” Barbara’s voice was tight with
disapproval. “Why are you being so cruel
to Nora?”
