Chapter 20
“Love can bloom again!” Shawn argued desperately. “If I treat you well enough, I can definitely rekindle all the love you had for me!”
Candace shook her head, “Shawn, I waited for you for eight years. I gave you countless chances during those eight years, but you never gave me an ounce of trust or believed a single word I said.
“You even wished for me to die during childbirth so I’d be out of the picture for someone else.”
“Candy, I…”
Candace interrupted him. “You say you love me, but after losing your memory, even your body forgot about me completely. You were easily manipulated by someone else. Is that what you call love?”
“Candy, I can explain!” Shawn was frantic.
“I only remembered something after taking medication to restore my brain functions. When I rushed into that fire to save you and fell into a coma, a dream where I followed a group of people to the other side of a cliff and met an old man.
“He said the price for me wanting to live would be losing all my memories of you. I couldn’t bear to leave you alone in this world, so I…”
Candace let out a scoff. “Are you really making up such ridiculous stories just to get me back? You’re absolutely insane!”
I had
She turned to leave, her back rigid with resolve. “Shawn, you can’t control everything in this world. The sun doesn’t rise in the west, rivers don’t flow uphill, and I will never forgive you or take you back.
“You’re a terrible husband and father. The least you can do is be a good son, so stop drinking and putting your mother through hell!”
“Everything I said is true, Candy! I’m not lying to you!” Shawn chased after her and blocked her path.
“I really had that dream, I swear!”
“I don’t believe a single word you say.” Candace walked over to Zayne, who had come to pick her up. She
“Let’s go!”
“You’re not allowed to go!” Shawn spread his arms wide to block the car, his expression fierce.
“Candy, if you insist on leaving with him, you’ll have to run me over first!”
got into his car.
Candace reluctantly got out of the car and tried to reason with him gently. “Can’t you be mature about this? Stop forcing me. I don’t love you anymore. This obsession of yours is completely pointless!”
“It’s not pointless! If you just give me a chance, we can go back to how things were!”
Shawn took off the silver necklace he was wearing and held it out to her, his voice determined. “I got back the necklace I’ve worn since I was little. Put it on and come home with me, okay?
“The lilies I planted for you have bloomed. You can see them from the bedroom window. They smell amazing and are beautiful!”
“She needs to go home and put her son to bed. She doesn’t have time to listen to your rambling.” Zayne stepped in front of Candace and pushed back the
necklace.
“Shawn, have some self–awareness. The person she loves now is me, not you!”

all night.”
“I’m begging you, Shawn.” Candace’s voice was choked with emotion. “Jamie is waiting for me to come home. If I’m late, he’ll
Shawn’s heart twisted in agony as he stepped aside, but he grabbed onto her sleeve and wouldn’t let go. “Candy, that dream was real! I’m not lying to you!
“I
“I don’t believe you.” Candace didn’t even glance at him as she turned and got in the car once more.
Shawn watched the car drive away with the two figures embracing inside, then clutched his chest and half–collapsed to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably.
During those eight years when he lost his memory, he never trusted Candy at all, and now he was getting a taste of his own medicine,
So this was how it felt not to be trusted by the person you love. The pain was unbearable. It was as if his heart and soul had been shattered into a million pieces.
He struggled to his feet using a nearby car for support, pressing his lips together and gritting his teeth.
There had to be a way to win Candace back. He would never give up!
