Chapter 27
“But I’m not willing.” Candace’s expression was cold as she said this.
“Jamie is my son and has nothing to do with the Hamiltons whatsoever. And no matter what you do, I will never let my son acknowledge you!”
“Candy!” Shawn looked at her with pain in his eyes.
His voice was hoarse as he said, “You can’t be this cruel to me. You can’t deny me my rights as a father-”
“Jamie’s father is Zayne,” she interrupted him. “If you’re not satisfied and want custody of the child, you can take me to court!”
Shawn’s face turned ashen with rage, but in the end, he said nothing and stormed off.
“Mommy, hug,” the little boy on the hospital bed called out, stretching his arms wide.
Candace held her child tightly, kissing his little cheeks. “Don’t be afraid, sweetheart. We’ll definitely find a suitable cornea to restore your sight!”
Persistence paid off. After 56 hours, Candace finally received news of another suitable corneal donor. The corneal transplant surgery was performed that very night.
When Shawn rushed over after hearing the news, he was blocked at the hospital entrance by Zayne’s people and couldn’t get a step closer. Shawn sent a steady stream of toy cars during Jamie’s recovery period, all of which Candace returned unopened.
Jamie was discharged from the hospital with his eye fully healed on New Year’s Eve. At the same time, Candace and Zayne held a grand engagement ceremony.
In the car, Candace adjusted her dress and noticed that all the street lamps throughout the city were adorned with blooming lily baskets, their fragrance filling the air.
She was admiring the beautiful sight when Jamie exclaimed excitedly, “Mommy, so many flowers!”
“Jamie, these are your mommy’s favorite lilies. Daddy had them flown in from Francocia.”
Zayne gazed at Candace with twinkling eyes. “The flowers mean everlasting love and blessings of many children!”
Candace blushed furiously under his smoldering look. “Don’t you dare make up flower symbolism! Lilies represent purity and eternal love, not a baby boom!”
“How can you say that?” His hand rested on her abdomen with a knowing smile.
“The seed has already been planted.”
“Zayne!” Candace was both embarrassed and annoyed, swatting his hand away.
“Jamie’s right here! Can’t you show some restraint? If you keep spouting nonsense, I’m not speaking to you anymore!”
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop.” Zayne intertwined their fingers.
He said tenderly, “In just two hours, you’ll be my fiancee. It feels so surreal to me.”
Candace kissed his cheek and asked, “Does it feel real now?”
Zayne was about to answer when his expression suddenly changed dramatically. “Eddie, turn! Turn now!”
Candace looked up and gasped in horror. A white SUV from the opposite lane was heading straight toward them in reverse!
The woman in the driver’s seat was actually Yelena! Hadn’t Shawn locked this woman up? How did she suddenly appear here?
Before Candace could figure it out, Yelena gripped the steering wheel tightly and crashed toward them, her eyes burning with hatred. “Candace, don’t think you’ll get your happily ever after! I’m going to make your family of three join my son in death!”
The violent impact echoed through the air. Candace’s body lurched forward from the tremendous force, but she was immediately shielded by a tall figure.
Car horns blared, and pedestrians shrieked in horror.
“My God, that black Maybach’s front end is completely crushed! The driver inside is bleeding heavily!”
“The female driver in the white SUV was cut in half! How horrific!”
Candace’s heart sank as she opened the car door and ran forward. She saw that it was Shawn’s car blocking her vehicle!
His car had collided with the white SUV, and the front was completely mangled. Her mind went blank as she rushed forward, desperately trying to pull Shawn from the wreckage that was the driver’s seat.
“Shawn, you can’t die! Stay with me!”
Shawn looked at her with dazed eyes as he asked weakly, “Is Jamie’s eye okay? Are you alright?”
“We’re all fine!” Candace shouted.
“Don’t close your eyes! We’re getting you to the hospital right now!”
