“I’m not upset. I truly think you and Shairine are a perfect match.”
“Stop joking-”
Before Jason could finish his sentence, Yves came around the corner, holding a bowl of ginger soup. “Hey, what
are you two talking about?”
I averted my gaze and responded with a smile, “Jason is wondering whether he should accept Shairine’s confession and came to ask for my opinion.”
Jason’s expression turned frosty, his anger blazing in his eyes like a fire about to erupt.
He stepped forward and grabbed my hand, his grip tight. Through clenched teeth, he asked, “Zoey, do you even know what you’re saying?”
The sharp pain in my wrist made me gasp.
“Of course I know. Jason, don’t you like Shairine?”
I met his gaze directly and clearly saw the hesitation flicker in his eyes. A bitter laugh escaped my lips.
Yves, oblivious to the tension between us, walked up with the ginger soup in hand.
“Alright, this is between Jason and Shairine. We’re outsiders; we shouldn’t get involved. Zoey, come back to your room and drink this before you catch a cold.”
With Yves‘ presence, Jason couldn’t vent his anger. He released my hand reluctantly, but the force he had used left a visible red mark on my pale wrist.
Yves noticed immediately and glared at Jason. “What the hell, man? Why so heavy–handed? Are you looking for a fight?”
Jason froze, caught off guard, and didn’t respond.
I rubbed the red mark on my wrist and shook my head. “Forget it. It doesn’t hurt. Let’s go back, Brother.”
There was nothing to gain from continuing this confrontation.
Back in my room, my phone buzzed in my hand. It was a message from Jason.
[I’ll come find you tonight. We need to talk.]
I didn’t reply and placed the phone aside.
After the afternoon’s chill, I felt dizzy and sluggish. Drinking the ginger soup Yves brought me helped, but I still decided to skip dinner and rest in my room.
I wasn’t expecting someone to knock on my door later in the evening, just as I was about to drift off again. To my surprise, it was Shairine with dinner in hand.
I opened the door to let her in, and she started talking as if on autopilot.
“Your brother specifically asked the kitchen to make this hot soup for you. Come on, drink it while it’s still warm.” I looked at her and rasped out, my throat dry and hoarse, “You didn’t just come here to bring me dinner, did you?” With no one else around, her mask fell off. The corners of Shairine’s lips curled into a triumphant smile. “Zoey, you’re not stupid. You should’ve seen how close Jason and I are. Honestly, I was worried he might have fallen for you, but after what happened today, I’m certain–he still loves me. He can’t let me go.”
So it was her. She pushed me into the water. Obviously, her goal was to test how much Jason cared for her.
I was speechless, my throat too sore to yell at her even if I wanted to.
“Did Jason tell you he likes me?” I asked, my voice barely audible.

“Of course not. I just guessed.” She set the food container on the table and plopped onto the nearby sofa. “You’re the only girl he spends so much time with besides me. If there weren’t something between you two, why would he be so close to you?”
“Or maybe it’s because of my brother? Jason is practically my second brother. What could possibly happen between us?” I replied.
There shouldn’t have been anything between us in the first place. Clearing things up now was just returning to how it should have been.
Shairine looked doubtful. “Really? You really don’t like him?”
“I don’t.”
